I have a 2006 Access Cab and I am pulling a 24 foot travel trailer. I have a load leveling hitch with anti-sway bars. Truck has plenty of power and I have no towing problems other than a "WAG" when a large vehicle passes me from behind! When I am passed by a big truck on the left my Tundra wants to first move to the left and then to the right - then it stabilizes. I'm sure this is caused by the wind pressure from the truck pushing & pulling the back of the trailer which causes it to "WAG" my Tundra. I rented a 2008 Tundra and it tows the trailer will much less WAG - but it is still there to some degree. Rather than spending $20,000+ and buying a 2008 I would like to improve my 2006 Tundra and decrease this trailer wag - it only happens when I am passed from behind! If I meet a big truck I don't feel anyting! How can I improve this wag tendency??

One way to eliminate this problem is to buy a 5th wheel!!
Back when i used to tow a TT, when i noticed a rig coming up on me in my mirror i would give them a little more room. Sometimes i would take up some of the shoulder to do it. It helped quite a bit.
What happens is they suck you in and then spit you out as they pass. The best thing to do as well is DON'T fight it.
Once i went with a fifth wheel, there is no wag whatsoever at any speed.
I had the same issue when towing a 23' travel trailer and even more so with a 30' travel trailer. No sway, just get pushed around when passing or being passed by a big truck.
I think the only option that we have for a bumper pull trailer is to install a Hensley Arrow type hitch. I have never used one, but reports are that this "wag" is greatly reduced with a Hensley. Costs $3000, so you will need to decide if it's worth the coin.
I don't have that problem. I just towed a 26'7" 5500lbs camper 200 miles yesterday without a sway or w/d hitch and never got any wagging except when I hit some crosswinds, slowed down to 60mph and went away. My new camper is 35'10" and I did a test tow on it a few weeks ago and didn't have any problems using an equalizer. Wagging can be caused quite a bit from loading the trailer with too much weight in the rear...are you guys sure your trailers are loaded correctly? Even my Tacoma never had any wag pulling the 26'7" camper...
The added wheelbase on the 2008 Tundra (10+ inches) makes this wag tendency much less. My wife says I'm concerned about nothing -- she isn't driving!
Can't afford a new truck, or a new 5th wheel - ! I have heard good things about the Hensley Arrow hitch addressing this very event - being passed by a Big Rig. So, I currently have a tentative deal on a 10 year old Henley -- Should have it next week if all goes well. Will need to clean it up, paint it, lube it - etc. I'll report back on how the Henley handles the Big Rigs!
Hi all,
Just wanted to report back about my trailer sway problem. I rented a 2008 Tundra X'tra cab truck to see how it would tow my 24 foot trailer. Glad to report that the new longer Tundra does reduce the trailer sway problem but I couldn't make a deal for the new truck! So, on Craigslist I found a used Hensley Arrow hitch. I paid $850 plus shipping total almost $1000, the hitch was in good shape, I painted it black so it would match my trailer frame (Hensley Arrows are orange in color). The Hensley Arrow is THE SOLUTION!! My 2006 x'tra cab Tundra now pulls my 6000 lb 24 foot trailer with ease. My tundra always had enough power, and with the Hensley I no longer feel intimidated by semi-trucks passing me. The Hensley does not take out all the movement from the wind created by passing trucks, you still feel a push, but the wag and the need to steer first one way and then the other is gone. Just a little steering correction and that is it! I recently drove in very windy condition in the Mojave Desert and the Hensley made the drive very uneventful. --- I will now always have a Hensley!!! Thanks - crewman126
Excellent! Another hensley success story. I have been watching the lists for one as well, but haven't found one at that price. Nice find. Enjoy the tow.
