Default Wireless compressor installed

Got a bur up my backside and decided to install the wireless compressor. The compressor is an AirLift 72000. I put the compressor up above the spare tire. Wired it into the 12V battery charger line that goes to the 7 pin connector for the trailer. The relay and mainfold went on the driver's side frame. Took about 4 hours but that's because it was coooolllld in the garage. Works like a champ. Probably not worth $360, but it sure is nice. The wireless remote is about the size of a garage door opener and it's on the visor now. It actually has homelink buttons on it, so it serves double duty.

I also installed the Gentex rear view mirror / backup monitor. That is sweet.

Overall, I'm pleased.

Sounds like a nice clean install Tom. Did you take any pics? Sounds like the upgrades for the new truck are coming along nicely. You'll be ready for camping soon!

Here's some pics of the install.

Compressor went under the spare tire on the driver's side. Seemed like a fairly clean and dry place to put it:

http://i.pbase.com/o6/35/508035/1/10...compressor.jpg

Compressor inlet is tucked up above the spare tire frame to keep it clean and dry. You could run this up into the cab, but I thought this would work:

http://i.pbase.com/o6/35/508035/1/10...essorinlet.jpg

Here's where the realy and manifold went. No rocket science here.

http://i.pbase.com/o6/35/508035/1/10...components.jpg

I decided to tap into the trailer battery charging line. It's switched with the ACC on the ignition and it is a 40A line. The compressor runs maybe once a day, so no real load on the line. I hooked both the compressor and manifold into the same point. Seemed silly running a line all the way up to the battery for the compressor when Toyota had already run a line all the way back from the battery that had more power than I needed. I put the provided fuzes in the compressor and manifold lines.

http://i.pbase.com/o6/35/508035/1/10...essorpower.jpg

Here's the manual fill valve. Toyota put a perfect size hole right there.

http://i.pbase.com/o6/35/508035/1/10...manualfill.jpg

And here is the best part of all: the wireless controller. Runs on 2 AAA batts. I can set whatever I want from anywhere within 15 ft or so of the truck. I gotta tell ya, now that I have it in and have used it, it is worth every penny.

http://i.pbase.com/o6/35/508035/1/10...lerforbags.jpg

Hope this helps someone thinking about installin an on board compressor.

Tom, nice install! I think I am going to try copying your work!

OT, but I also saw the pic of your rig and trailer. Do you have an actual weight for your travel trailer? How does the truck handle / perform / mpg's? etc.. while pulling that trailer?

I am considering a picking up a boat that is right at 10,500lb's on the trailer.

Thanks!

Well Tom; you've done it again.

Made us spend more money on our trucks.

Just ordered 3 of these for dad's truck, my brother's and mine. I think we're going to do it the same exact way you did.
Might get to them this weekend, don't know.

Do you have any tips for us?

Thank you for all the help!!

Any issues with yours at all?

The hardest part was drilling the holes for the compressor. They were blind drills because I didn't have a 90 deg head for the drill. Had to drill a couple extra for the last hole. If you have a 90 deg air drill, it will be a snap. Other than that, it's straight forward. Also, when you mount the manifold, the provided self tapping screw is too short (the very long screw that goes through the body). I just substituted a long bolt.

Getting the manifold to marry with the remote required a stronger magnet than what they provided. I borrowed one of my kids magnets and it worked great.

Only issue I have found so far is on days that are 0 deg F or colder, the compressor will run for 30 sec - 1 min for some reason. Not sure why.

I'm glad I got the compressor. It runs once a week for 1-2 sec to keep the bags at 5 psi. I can also set the left for 7 psi and the right for 5 psi after I fill up to keep the truck level after I fill up the tank (I'm weird like that).

We've got an angle drill, but the thing is huge and i don't know if i'd have enough room to get it in there????

I got plenty of longer sheet metal screws if that would work.

Magnet? How big are these magnets, and what shape are they?

Cold weather seems to cause tires to lose pressure, maybe ditto for the bags.

Nice you can change the psi side to side. Sweet.

I've been told the kit comes with only one tee; is this correct? I'm just concerned how we're going to tye into two lines.

Thanks for the tips Tom

Mounting the compressor was not that hard, just have to blind drill the holes. You'll see once you put the compressor up and try to mark the holes. You can't see where the marks are.

Just a teenie tiny magnet. They provide one in the kit, but it didn't seem to work.

Kit comes with 2 tees, so you can tie into both sides while retaining the manual fill valve.

Okay, i got ya.

Don't know where i'll find a tiny magnet that'll work better.

2 tees; good deal, but will i be able to have 2 manual fills or just one? If it's just one, then the other will be a dummy i guess. Both of them have been mounted right next to the safety chain holes below the hitch.

Or maybe i'll need to relocate the manual fill to where you put yours???? Might not have enough hose; dont know.

What do you think?

You'll be able to keep both manual fills. 2 lines come out of the manifold, one for each side. Each T's to their respective bag and manual fill.

The magnet is a one time use item required to marry the controller and manifold. Doesn't have to be tiny. Just big enough to activate whatever they have inside the manifold that tells it to marry up.

Well, got my truck done tonight. It took me and my bro about 2 hours, thanks to your help Tom. Thank you.

Yep, we still have two manual fills and all went well. Didn't have a problem marrying the remote with the provided magnet. What i noticed with it is that it wanted to go towards the frame and not stick to the manifold itself. So, i put the magnet directly behind that spot right on the frame of the truck of which the manifold is mounted.
We mounted the compressor in the little cubby on the drivers side next to the spare tire. The manifold was mounted in the cubby on the passenger side, and the relay about 10" away from the manifold.
Hopefully the manifold won't get too much heat from the exhaust. It's not directly above it, so we may be alright.

Homelink buttons? We didn't see anything that talked about this.

It seems as though the remote will only add more air if you increase by 3 lb increments. For some reason i can't do 7 on the drivers side, and 5 on the passenger. It must be 8 and 5 or more to work.
Maybe i just don't know enough about the remote yet. Guess i'll have to do some more reading.

Thanks for the tip on the self tapping screw not being long enough. I grabbed a few long bolts with nuts and washers, that are a perfect fit.

The wiring schematic threw us off for a minute. They have 2 power wires; 1 for ignition, and one for battery. Because we wired into the trailer lead, we put both these wires into the same lead. Each with their respectable fusable links of course. It's good that the compressor will not even run unless the truck is on.

Thanks again Tom; we really appreciate your help.

Excellent. I discovered there is no homelink. I thought the 2 buttons with dots were homelink, but it turns out they aren't.

I forget how I got 7 and 5 psi. I think I used the 4 arrows to select the side I wanted and was able to select each individual side in 1 psi increments. I'll look at it again.

You are going to giggle when you hook up your 5er. Love the wireless.
