Angry Check your tires!!!

If you have any brand of Carlisle tires on your trailer, get rid of them! I had a blowout on my 5'er this weekend and did about $2000 worth of damage. The brand that was on mine was a UltraCRT that's made by Carlisle. I took it to the dealership that I bought it from (about 3.5 hours away) and when I talked to the service tech, he said that I was the eleventh customer that this happened too. I talked to one of my friends and he said that his dad and his friend had the same thing happen to them, they blew out all four of their tires within a week and a half. Anybody got a good recommendation on what tires I should put on it? I would like a load range E, the ones that I had were D.

My trailer came with "mission" brand tires, but the dealer changed them to Goodyears before i took delivery. They had told me that Keystone rv actaully had a recall on certain Mission brand trailer tires.

This is my 2nd season with the goodyears and so far no issues.

also not only should you check your tires, but also the lug nuts! My buddy lost a wheel off his trailer when the lugs backed off....funny now, but wasnt then. to say the least he always checks them now, me i ytpically check everything before each trip.

I looked at the Goodyears, but to match the weight carrying capacity of my 5'er, I would have to go to a 16" rim. I think that I'm going to go with the Maxxis M8008 ST radial. It matches the load carrying for my trailer and I've heard good things about them. So here's hoping.

The Maxxis are highly recommended on the rv.net fora. They're all made in China. Even the Goodyears. I have Carlisle's on my trailer and may switch them out this season. I'm using a PressurePro trie pressure monitor on them so maybe that will mitigate the risk. Although a catastrophic blow out will not be mitigated by monitoring the pressure real time.

Good info; thanks.

Our 5er is running Nankang 275/75/15's right now but will soon be upgraded. My dad owns a tire shop, and he recomends some 700/15's he has and he swares by them.
My bro's trailer has a nankang tire that is out around already at 2 yrs old.

We to have the same problem with going bigger on a 15". Without going to a 16", it's pretty hard to find a good tire, but the 700/15's will be about an inch taller.

That's where I got some info about the crapisle's. It seems to be a good forum for info on trailers. When we left the campground, the tires were at 62 PSI, the max for them is 65. When we got home after the blowout, the three remaining tires were still at 62( I let them cool down for about 3 hours before I checked). Luckily, I checked the spare before we went on the trip and aired it up. BTW, the campground we were at was only about an hour and a half away, so I hadn't driven that far on them that day.

I've got Maxxis here also. Been very happy with them compared to others I've had on campers. My camper is an '05 and the tires still look great with no cracking or signs of drying out.

Were you aware of the blowout right away? I have heard folks tell tales of not even knowing they had an issue until someone pulled along side and signaled that they had an issue.

This is a serious problem in trailers right now. The number of blowout threads on the rv.net fora is downright scary. Now I'm wondering if I should have spent the $400 that I paid on the PressurePro and just got a new set of tires.

Mission Tires have similar problem here. I'd like to go with LT tires although I understand that they're hard to find in 15" and they may not be so good for long term parking. I still haven't repaired all the damage a mission tire blowout caused, but it was underneath the slide-out and it shredded all the electrical lines to crap plus damaged the wheel wells.

When mine blew it was very obvious, sounded like a shotgun twenty feet behind me!

Has anyone gone to LT tires, D or E rated?

My wife was following behind me and called me and said that something black just flew off and she was going to turn around and check it. I looked back in the driver side mirror and actually saw the tire explode. It sounded like a gunshot. The trailer shook once or twice and the Tundra shook once and steadied itself out. I had never had a blowout before and I was always scared about one, but I feel a lot better now that I know how the Tundra and trailer will react. I can honestly say that this is the best tow vehicle that I have ever had out of all the Chevy's and Fords I towed with.

Just curious but how fast were you going when the tire blew out?
Did the trailer stay tracking in your lane?
Curious minds need to know.

I know you're asking him, not me but I'll respond anyway. Mine's a 34' 5th wheel 12,000 lbs approx and I was going 60 MPH when the rear driver's side trailer tire exploded and shredded. The trailer remained directly behind the truck and did not sway to any appreciable degree.

Oops! Yes I was asking you.
I have those cheap tires as well.
I ask about the speed because I have seen folks going 80 mph pulling their trailers like there is no tomorrow. I have heard that the tires are not rated for that speed but that does not appear to be the case in your situation.

Looks like its time to go tire shopping.

I've also got crappy tires on my 5er, and if i can afford it they'll be replaced this spring with LT tires. Almost all house trailers come with POS tires from the factory, and desperately need to be upgraded.

An ST tire (from what i've been told if i remember correctly) is only good for 65 mph top speed. An LT tire is what goes on a truck, and they come in P, C, D, AND E. You would want at least a C rated tire, and going up from there to a D or E is a good decision. They could also handle higher speeds, and in some cases depending on the tire will actually tow easier.

I was going between 55 and 60. The trailer tracked very well and the truck handled it like no tomorrow. I called the maker of the RV, Gulfstream, and told them that Carisle wasn't going to replace the tires and that I didn't want to pull it with the current tires on it. They are supposed to be getting back with me today about it. If they don't satisfy me, I'll file a complaint and just take the trailer to Discount Tires Direct and trade in the ones on there and get the Maxxis.
