I used to rile them up all the time when I posted pics of my Tacoma and a trailer on there. They told me I was gonna kill anyone if I went down a mountain, so I showed pics of it on the mountains in Maine.

I bought a Toyota because I wanted a reliable truck. I was a GM fan for years and they all let me down weather they cost $1000 or $30,000...soon as they hit 36,001 miles they start having problems. Have yet to have a problem with any "foreign" made, US Built vehicle I have owned.

Oh, i know i know.

I was visiting there last night on a few things. It's interesting what they come up with over there. But yet you always see posts about the duramax going into limp mode (30 mph ) while towing home, so it can clean out the exhaust system. Then there's the posts from guys with 3/4 or 1 ton trucks that want airbags. But yet they shouldn't need them if they're a big bad 1 ton. What a joke.

'I want more power out of my diesel' and 'how can i get better mpg.'

Then the posts about the tundra not having enough braking to stop a big trailer. But yet it's been proven that the tundra actually stops BETTER than their trusty one ton trucks. Obviously, they don't know anything about the tundra.

There is a good post about the large popouts and required maintenance for them. YOu should clean all the grease off the slides, then use a dry lube on them. DO NOT use grease, as it attracts dirt and gunk which can cause problems. A few guys use WD-40 for the lube, but of course that was shot down in a hurry saying it attracts grime. ONe guy claims that chain lube works great for him.
They say you should clean the rear jacks (screwtype) at the carwash really good and lube them as well.

I'm thinking about joining the club over there, and plastering pictures everywhere of my rig's. That oughta get a rise out of everybody.

Yes i agree and i have bitten my tongue a few times while on both rv.net and outbackers. Oh if the all mighty big 3 should fall they will all be lost. I have said that i know i am at my trucks limits for payload and should be in a 3/4 ton, but the tundra holds its own and here is a little bit of my experience.

I was one of the sheepoeple having owned nothing but dodge for 15 years ranging from a 96 3500 ctd to an 05 hemi. I cant say anything bad about the cummins except they had put that worse transmission behind it! I made the mistake of test driving my tundra thinking it couldnt be better than my precious hemi....yeah and then i found myself owning it 15 minutes after.

How has the tiny little baby tundra truck held up against its bigger competition? Well i will first say nobody i know has made fun of the truck and especially after seeing it perform.

first up, my buddy's 02 F350 V10 with 3:73 gears towing a similiar weight and size trailer as i(32' 8klbs+). I have walked past him while using cruise control going up hills in new england, i know this isnt the rockies so we dont need to go there. My point is that big block got winded and couldnt keep up, he actually thought i was pushing my truck and was shocked to hear it was in cruise control.

Next my fathers 08 3500 DMAX dually with the unstopable allison tranny towing a 40' triple slide 5er toy box weiging in at about 15k lbs. Last summer when leaving upstate NY we hit route 90 coming out of the Ma toll booth there is a grade that runs a few miles. I was behind him at the toll, halfway he dropped from 65mpg to 50mph, i passed him and pulled back to 65mph.

I have never had a so called white knuckle drive, never felt like i couldnt stop in time and had too much sway. As a matter of fact last fall we took my truck and trailer with 3 dirt bikes in the bed and headed to our riding area, my father commented on how well the tundra towed and it was almost as smooth as his 5th wheel on the highway.

You will almost never get any honesty from the diesel guys on rv.net as they need to justify $45k+ spent on an oil burner. So for me been there done that and currently i dont need it. They will claim they get 80 miles to the gallon and can stop on a dime, yet my father reports 14mpg and stops like an aircraft carrier!

Good luck fighting the battle on rv.et/trailerlife.com as they are narrowed minded and it is just a waste of energy. Just go along with it shake your head and agree with them about you being an unamerican communist for driving a toyota that was built by amaericans rather than mexican built corporate bonused fools

Hey Terry 2000.

That's a nice trailer you got there, but you didn't care to comment on the truck pulling that thing.

We want to hear more.

Dont take my post wrong, i do believe there are applications that require bigger diesel trucks. For now my situation is fine when i check my weights, even though i know when i load bikes in the truck i exceed the cargo capacity i am still ok with it. I certainly wouldnt back my truck up under my fathers 5th wheel, it wouldnt be pretty.

I agree with you. I mean if you want to tow a house around, then so be it. But for the majority of us that tow trailers, most are within our 10k capacity.
For what i tow, my truck does a fine job. Got a 8k lb fiver, and a 10k lb gooseneck horse trailer and i'm completely satisfied.

Would you back your truck under MY dad's 5th wheel? It's 9k mostly loaded for camping, and my dad is tickled pink with the truck. This reminds me of a recent comment in this thread about coming from a 3/4 ton. This tundra handles my dads trailer BETTER than his previous HD chevy.

Here's my dad's:

Nice rig, dad has good taste! I've never towed an RV just equipment trailers. The empty weight of my 18' trailer is 4900 lbs. Now, add a backhoe or A300 Bobcat and you have a load. It's towed with the diesel. Plus, my Eagle lift gate and tool box weight over 2000 lbs combined. The Tundra is used for the lighter equipment. Now, I will not complain about Tundra's power, I'm just a little worried about towing over 10k with a 1/2 ton truck.

Dave, i agree with you. If i was towing my trailer every week i would be looking for more truck. Bottom line even though i do believe the tundra is closer to being a 3/4 ton truck, it still is only a 1/2 ton and shouldnt be subjected to do more than what it was built for.

Me, i camp about 6 times a year and 2 times being with a motorcycle which puts me over my cargo cap. yet the truck still does very well.

As for rv.net/trailerlife.com people, they dont seem to understand that most of us dont need a 1 ton dually to drive around as a grocery getter 90% of the time. Certainly would be a need if i were hauling heavy equipement all day.
I would say about 70% of those guys that are towing with 3/4 ton diesels are also over their cargo capacity, but they feel becuase i in my toyota am at more risk than they. They claim to tow doing 100mph like nothing is behind them yet i tow at 65mph knowing i have a load. I have driven my fathers dually diesel with his 15k 5th wheel and know there is a heck of a load behind....

Like i said, diesel , been there done that and for now i have no need for it.

Yeah you're right. I just got done doing a front brake job on the Toyota. Wow! Much easier then other trucks! Everything was easy to get to and the entire job took 30 minutes.

Very nice TT's and trucks guys!!
I have a '06 Double cab and tow a 25' TT (5500+ lbs), it does pretty well but I am tempted to get a '07 or newer w/ a 5.7, you see I only get 8-9 MPG with what I have now while towing.

What MPG are you guys getting with your 5.7's and 25-30' TT's?

Thanks!!

i dont think your fuel mileage will improve that much, maybe 1-2 mpg depending on how you drive. The frontal surface of the trailer really has a lot to do with how much power it takes to get moving.
With that said i get about 8-9mpg towing a 32' 8200lb trailer, not bad for a small block gasser considering it out paces a f350 v10 on hills when towing.

Yah, anywhere from 8 to 10 MPG... really not that bad considering my old diesel would get 12-13MPG but we had a 5500# 23' trailer...
