I can not find any 5th wheel trailer that is within the specs. available on my 2008 SR5 DC.. with the tow pkg..
I can have a GCVW of 13,500 .. and the truck GVW is 6700 ...
and the door sticker says it can only load 1350 .. (people, gas, cargo, and guitars)
Does anyone know of a 5th wheel that would not push the Tundra over it's factory set limits...
(my insurance agent told me to stay within the factory limits, or I could be on my own if I were in an accident.. He said the weights and limits are now one of the first things that they look at to try and void your coverage)
You are going to have to get a really small light 5th wheel, they are out there. It just isn't worth it when you can get everything you need/want in a standard TT while staying legal.
You could get another agent my wife is my agent and she says your agent is not right. I tow a crossroads Zinger that the factory says is a half ton camper. If your agent were right a good one third of campers would be in trouble.

I want a 5th wheel , but I want to be "legal" ...
Rex..
It sounds like to me Rex, that you have the 4.7L motor. Is that correct?
My 5.7L DC TRD has a GCWR of 16000 lbs, and GVWR is 7100 i beleive. Really, IMO the main thing you need to be concerned about is the GAWR listed in the camper section of your manual, when concerning a fifth wheel. It's wise to NOT exceed these ratings.
The GAWR of my truck is 4150 rear and 4100 front, which is 8250 total. I have a 6200lb (dry) 5th wheel trailer with actual weights being 7500 mostly loaded for camping. I have actually weighed this setup. Please see thread in this section titled ' 5th wheel actual weights ' to see more.
I am within my GAWR of the truck with this trailer, that has a 1250lb pin weight.
It is not hard to exceed the 7100lb GVWR of this truck with a 5er. But if you stay within the GAWR you will be perfectly safe.
Yes, you should be able to find a 5er that would work. But with your truck having those ratings, i don't know.
Here is mine, before i lifted the trailer.

Thanks for the input ..
I have a question, Charlie .... did you have to replace the tail light assy, because the pressure of that heavy 5th wh. pin weight blew out the tail light ???
Seriously, thanks for the input ... I am going to talk to my agent(s) real hard.
I will have Hellwig Air Bags, and Hellwig Rear Stab. Bar.
I will never travel with full water tanks..
But I will have propane bottle full (just one full)
Well, what do you think ..... am I going to be OK with this set up?
thanks,
Rex

Here is what I am looking at .... what do you think?
'08 DC (Tundra Grade) 4.7 V-8 ................. GVWR = 6700 lbs--Over 320lbs, but IMO perfectly okay with a 5er.
Truck's GCVW .................................................. ..=13,500 lbs--1515lbs under so you are a-okay if you don't load the trailer heavy. But you need to be aware of the fact the trailer will be easily 1k lbs over dry weight mostly loaded.
Truck's GAWR Rear .............................................= 4,000 lbs--Okay.
Truck's Tow Capacity (per factory window sticker...= 8100 lbs--Okay here
Truck's Payload Capacity(door pillar 1340).window sticker ..=1535 lbs--Is this what you are going off of? If you are, you're over weight by 320 lbs. But IMO you shouldn't go off this with a fifth wheel. Go off GAWR, which states what the truck can ACTUALLY handle.
Truck with full tank of gas, 2 people, 5th wheel hitch
(and factory accessories....) ............................... =6140 lbs
I will have Hellwig Air Bags, and Hellwig Rear Stab. Bar.--IMO, this does increase the payload capacity along with D rated tires.
I will never travel with full water tanks.. I try to as well when i know i'll have water available where im going.
But I will have propane bottle full (just one full)--You should keep both full, but this isn't much weight.
Well, what do you think ..... am I going to be OK with this set up?
thanks,
Rex
Note above responses in red.
To answer your question; yes you'll be just fine. You're barely above GVWR, and below GAWR for your truck. Well below GCWR as well. I would tow this trailer with no worries if i were you.
The most important weights to stay within for safey reasons are; GAWR and GCWR when towing a fifth wheel.
Is there a way to figure out what is the weight on the rear axle..
Without actually putting the rear of the truck on a scale?
Rex
Had to go back a few pages here to find your answer.
Yes, but you need to go to a cat scale and weigh the setup. You could have someone else tow the trailer there and meet up to weigh it. They actually have 3 pads on the scales; front, drive axles, and trailer. When i weighed mine, i think i didn't pull far enough ahead.
Empty, the tundra DC is about 2600 lbs on the rear axle. So you have about 1400 lbs you could haul ( 5er or camper that is ).
I bumped the ' fifth wheel actual weights ' thread so you can read up on it. Some good info there.
Just for comparison, I just picked up a 5th wheel a couple of weeks ago. Here are the specs after I weighed in at a Cat Scale. All the weights are with driver only.
Truck
07 RCSB with SAP and tow package deleted.
12k class 4 hitch
16k 5th wheel hitch
3/4 tank of gas
Ride rite (Firestone) air bags (15# to achieve ride height equal to stock)
Rancho 9000xl adj. shocks (#7 setting)
Trailer
05 Aljo 2605 27' 5th wheel
6440# factory Dry weight
940# factory Dry Pin weight
Full water and propane
It's amazing how fast the weight adds up when you're fully loaded and ready to go. After we camped for the weekend I stopped by the scales on my way home to see what the fully loaded trailer weighed. I found that since the fresh water tank was over the trailer axle and the gray and black water tanks were in front of the trailer axle, when the water transfered to the gray and black tanks it added about 150# to the pin weight. I also had a generator, bundle of fire wood, bike and BBQ box in the bed of the truck. These are maxed out weights in the camping mode. Although I've towed several travel trailers before, this is the 1st 5th wheel and what a difference. We had a storm blow through with some pretty strong cross winds and no sway at all. It was like the trailer was part of the truck.
