Hello all. I have a 01 Tundra SR5 Access Cab w/4.7L. Bought it new, never had any problems--GREAT truck. Truck was a demo, came with hitch (7500#), and I THINK tow package (still checking on that).
I've towed a U-haul car hauler about 300mi without any problems in the past. Now I'm taking the car--'68 Mercury Cougar--to a buddy's house in AZ to finish it. About 1500mi one-way. I'm hoping to find a wood-deck open center trailer for less weight. Anybody have any long-distance towing advice with this truck? Won't be carrying much in the truck/bed at all--99% will be on trailer/in car.
Thanks, looking forward to spending time on here and getting more info on keeping the truck going...John
1st: Buy a good brake controller if you don't already have one. Prodigy is highly regarded and runs about $99 off the internet. 2nd: Weight Distributing hitch so that all the weight is not sitting on the ball of your Tundra and you're not dragging a$$. 3rd: Turn off overdrive while towing. 4th: Don't tow over 60mph for the "best" gas mileage. 5th: Relax and enjoy the drive!

If you are going I-10 to southern AZ be aware there are some fairly steep grades east of El Paso and again just east of Benson, AZ. If you go north on I-40 get construction info. Last time I drove it was tore up off and on for about a 100 mile stretch around the Texas/New Mexico border. Also Texas, New Mexico and Arizona can get scary windy, I would not dream of towing there without a sway control. Last month I towed from El Paso to Midland with a 35 mph headwind the entire way. No fun at all until I found a big rig going 60, set my cruise control and drafted behind him for over a hundred miles.
Thanks for the responses...looks like I have a little studying to do before embarking on this adventure..
I belong to a similar site for the '68 Cougar...looking forward to coming here and maybe treating the "Old Daily" to some upgrades....
I'll get some pics this weekend of it's current state--and HOPEFULLY if this tow goes OK some pics next month of it completed!!!! Can't pass it up-buddy in AZ has a place for me to stay, and is going to teach me motor rebuild, body work/paint, new interior--all for cost of materials!!! THAT'S the reason I'm willing to tow 1500mi!!
