I'm just wondering because I am frequently passed by vehicles towing at this speed or even faster. I probably could go as fast if I wanted to but I like to keep things safe by driving no more than 60-65 when towing.
I have read a few threads here about people very happy with their diesel 3/4 or 1 ton trucks towing 15,000 lbs at 75 MPH and curiously there seems to be no outcry and I wonder if that is because this is considered safe.
Just wondering.
I posted the above question on RV.net and the thread was instantly deleted. Was I out of line? Don't spare my feelings.

As much as I hated physics in college, I always knew that I could never beat physics- it always wins in the end. I always ask myself the same question when I pull our travel trailer (about 9500 pounds): "If you had to slam on the brakes, would you rather slam them on at 80 mph or 65 mph?" Thats what keeps me at 65 mph. That, and my TT tires are speed rated for 65 mph as well. Could I go faster? Yep. I just don't want to. I simply don't see the point.
I see F350s and 2500s blowing down the road with horse trailers and empty flatbeds or goosenecks as if they were trying to go back in time or something. Are they dumb? No, I don't think that either. They are just, in my opinion, making a foolish decision mainly because of the raw physics involved.
TundraBay, I have appreciated your posts here about your towing experiences and your insight about the axle strength, but lately this constant talk of "I did this over on RV.net and they reacted this way, aren't they dumb hahahahaha" talk is really getting annoying. If you like to rile them up on purpose-I don't care. If you are treated unfairly over there-I don't care. If they say the Tundra sucks over there-I don't care. I am not trying to be rude here and I hope you don't take this as a personal attack-like I said, I appreciate your relevant posts. I don't visit RV.net and I don't need it brought to TS. I do not know how others feel but that is my opinion.
corb and cwit y'all need to get your panties unbunched. How's he bragging? He's not saying he does 100mph with no problem.
As for the braking question, the 3/4 ton -1 ton trucks weigh more and will not get pushed around when braking at a higher speed, but all the guys I know that tow 30,000# and up stay around 65 but are all ctd duallys.
It's not how much you can pull it's how much you can stop. If you have some serious trailer brakes (that could pretty much stop the weight of the trailer by itself then go for it, otherwise you're risking a jack knife situation.

I occasionlly will run around 70, but my tires are rated for 65 and so I really try and stay at or below that mark. I've already had one blowout and almost another, so I don't want to push it.
I am with the majority here, I tend to tow at 65 MPH, I have done bursts above that by quite a bit and this is with my 2000 Tundra, but 65 MPH is much easier on everyone, except the guy stuck behind ya in traffic and would love to pass you.
As for that other forum, like said before you aren't banned but I do believe you are on their terrorist list... nuff said.

Actually cwit and corban I think you both have an excellent point. And I did request that you not spare my feelings The intent at least initially was never to offend. When I first posted on the RV site I naively thought there would be some interest. The disdain I felt many had for what I believed was marginally overloading my truck surprised me to the extent that I considered other Tundra drivers might be interested.
Anyway the fact that a few of them came over to TS doesn't really affect us, they'll get bored of this soon enough. As I in fact have as well.

Sorry accidental double posting of the same message. Funny that we can't delete our own posts but we can go back and edit all we want. . .
Also the intended title of this thread was "Is it Safe to Tow At 75 MPH?". I already know it saves money to tow at 60 - 65 because your mileage is much improved.

ST (trailer tires) are rated for 65 mph. If you exceed that, the rated capacity is decreased by 10%. I drive at 65-68. Some states have laws limiting you to 55 mph while towing.

I haven't driven in CA, but I've driven in a bunch of eastern seaboard states as well as the midwest and I've seen the signs at least a few times, that speed limits are lower if towing or driving transport truck.

"What if" tends to keep me at a reasonable speed when towing. Failure of anyone of a myriad of mechanical items could be disastrous to not only me and my business ( contractor trailer), but others sharing the road with me.
Much like drunk driving, it's not so much what I do to myself, it's the innocent around me. If I was to cause the injury of someones' child...... I don't think I could live with myself. That, and I will forever revert to my military training back in the day (Heavy equipment).
Do what you feel comfortable with. Keep your gear in top condition. Hope for the best, but plan for the worst

I haven't been through Illinois in ages, but I agree with the "hate driving though" part, I was very happy to have that state history - seemed like all roads led through the Chicago tollway$$$$. Chicago - CA... what can I say both full of __________.
