Greetings all I am a new member.
I have a 2000 Tundra Access 4-dr. SR5 short bed. I just purchased a Reese 16k slider 5th wh. hitch to pull a 1995 Prowler 21' we purchased in Or. and have to pick it up in Oct. I'm OK with wiring the plug an brake controller but mounting the hitch is a little tricky to me.
I don't have the trailer here to back the truck under and see how much or little clearance there is on a 90 degree turn so I have to figure how an where to mount it in the bed .
My concerns are I have the hitch / rails but not all hardware, I will try to get the specialized hwre. from Reese.
Has anyone done a do it yourself install on the short bed with a slider ?? That may be able to give me some parameters on exactly where in the bed to mount it ???? And also any tips or advice from their experience.
I have searched on Reese and they only show me install dimensions for a full sized 8' bed.
The 21' prowler does have a forward angled extension on the neck. So I guess that is a big plus, this is our first 5th wh. trailer.
Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.
Frank, first response to your question may not be that helpful, but I'll give it a try. When towing straight down the road, the pin weight should be just ahead of the rear axle. So that's the first part of your setup. I'd go to a trailer shop and talk to one of the mechanics who does the installation to get details about settings, how it slides when you turn the corner, etc. Also the whole thing has to be absolutely centered left to right. You'll need the angle brackets to attach the rails to the frame, 4 of them in my case (but mine isn't a slider), and all the bolts, nuts, washers and all that good stuff. Mine bolts to the bed in 2 places each side and via angle brackets to the frame 2 places each side as well.
It's pretty solid so far.

Thank you for your response. I contacted the MFG'S Tech line and got all the info and part #'s of the hardware I needed then ordered them. So I shopuld be set to go in about a week. Thanks again
I have installed the Reese 16k with the super slide, the install has NOTHING to do with clearance when turning (no matter what you will not get 90 degree turning clearance, trust me on this one ). There are directions with measurements for installing the hitch, like said by TundraBay the hitch needs to be just slightly ahead of the axle. I don't remember the measurements with my 2000 Tundra as that was too long again and it has since moved on to new owners, but for my '07 it was 29.75" from the back edge of the box if memory serves. Before you start drilling holes get the instructions for your Tundra and it will be a breeze after that... oh and some quality drill bits .

Update: I did a search of my files and the only instructions you will find for your Tundra will be for the long bed as they didn't recommend towing a 5'er with the AC model and shorter box... I did it anyway. The measurement is 32.5" from back edge of the box, and there are some bolt spacing and drilling requirements. If you need the directions let me know and I will try to get them on here.

Hank, It may have to do with how much of an overhang you have on the front of your 5th wheel, but I can reach 90 degrees, and I don't have a slider. Maybe some trailers let the pin hang out a little more forward, but the 6.5' bed allows at least this trailer to turn fully.

Ya have to remember he is installing on a 1st gen. Tundra which does not even have a 6.5' bed, at least my 2000 didn't. Rear wheel is further forward also.
With my '07 Tundra I don't need a slide as I have an 8' bed and I have cranked around more than 90 degrees with it. When I installed the hitch in this truck I didn't even bother putting the lever for releasing the slide on the hitch.
If you have a tongue extension that helps, the other consideration is how wide the rig is, some are 7.6', some are 8', my Rockwood is an 8' wide for certain and with my 2000 Tundra and the slide all the way back I have still put the corner through the back window of the truck .
