Just picked up an aluminum 12 foot long utility trailer to haul my ATV and a bit of gear on hunting trips. Should I shift out of overdrive all the time when towing or only on hilly terrain?

May be a dumb ? but do not want to damage the tranny even though the trailer is small.

The best way to answer that question is to just get on the highway with the trailer and see how the truck pulls it. if it is downshifting often then yes keep the o/d off, if doesn't down shift often then you are good to go and leave o/d on. also if you see your coming to a large hill at the bottom you may want to take the o/d off early. just play with it and find out what your truck likes to run at.

I have a 10 foot steel trailer with 3' foot sides and don't have any problem in OD with a quad on it. Load it with a cord of firewood and that's a different story.

I agree with bvoelker, depends how much the trailer weighs when fully loaded. I pulled a 5x8 uhaul from FL to CO with the over drive on. i had no problems and the trailer was loaded with tools and furniture.

I pull my 3000 lb tent trailer with OD on and it is fine, no hunting of gears so I would assume you should be ok too.

This would depend on weight and terrain. anything over 1500lbs and your in some steep hills turn it off once on the flats or modrate incline turn it back on. The 06 has great tranny.
