Default Coachmen Chaparral Lite 5ver

I currently pull a TT (see signature) and I'm thinking about going to a 5ver, the two 5ver's that I like are the 2010 Coachmen Chaparral Lite 267RLS and the 270RKS, what I'm worried about is the fact that on the drivers side door jamb is a tag that says "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed 1395 pounds". My Tundra is the 2008 Crew Max (see signature). Here's the published specs for the 5vers that I am looking at:

For the 267RLS

Base Weight = 6536
carrying capacity = 2562
Hitch weight = 1098
Length = 28'-10"

For the 270RKS

Base Weight = 6746
carrying Capacity = 2399
Hitch Weight = 1146
Length = 30'-3"

My question is after you subtract the hitch weight and the SuperGlide 12K hitch weight from the 1395lbs I'm not left with much for anything else and I'm sure that these figures are for an empty trailer so the loaded hitch weight should be more! Should I just stay with my TT and forget about the 5ver? Is a 5ver doable?

If you think you need to go off the drivers door jamb, well then you'll probably be slightly over them numbers. But, if you go off real numbers like; RAWR which is listed in the camper section of your owner's manual which is 4150 rear and 4100 front. Then you'll be well within those numbers, and be perfectly safe with either 5er.
The axle on your truck has been tested for 5500 lbs, and it's held up well. So Hino put a max weight on the axle at that amount. This is the 5.7L with the tow package axle.

My 5er weighs in at 6250 dry w/ 1250 pin. Mostly loaded for travel it weighs 7500lbs and the pin stayed the same. Whether or not YOUR loaded pin will go up or not, depends on where the black and grey tanks are as well as the water tank. Storage compartments could play somewhat of a factor, but for me they did not. And i have a ton of stuff up there in the front.

My recomendation with the tundra is to stay around or below the 1250 pin wieght if you can. That way you'll be under the RAWR on the truck. And IMO the axle weight is what you should target, NOT the GVWR when it comes to a 5er.

The trailer's you are looking at are a great candidate for the tundra, and more than likely you won't need airbags or supersprings either. So i say take the plunge on either, and you'll be glad you made the switch.

I certainly do appreciate your input and will use the axle rating info which also is posted on the door frame to see how it works out, and yes I do have the 5.7L and the tow package, thanks.

Not to hijack but if you end up going that way I know someone with the pullrite superglide hitch that he may be interested in selling. Let me know if you are interested.

That pullrite is the cat's meow for your CrewMax, I would for sure grab hold of one.

As for towing either of those rigs, I will go with what has already been posted by OTFM, use common sense when you load the rig to keep the pin weight under control if need be. I know I would pull either one without a second thought.

I am very impressed with what I see in the 12K SuperGlide Hank and I'll get one for sure if I manage to go the 5ver route. The way my thinking goes, I'll need the SuperGlide, and I'll need to replace the car tires with LT tires (they're about ready to be replaced anyway), and maybe, if needed, go with SuperSprings over airbags but only if they are needed (They seem pretty simple and straight forward). The thing that scares me most is the extra height of a 5ver, is that hard to get used to? I mean how do you gauge where you can and cannot go?

Pretty much you can't go under anything lower than the roof over the gas pumps at the gas station. Good rule of thumb is if a semi can fit, so can you.

PS: I should have a PM for you in a day or two. Trying to get ahold of the guy.

For sure the LT tires in C or higher rating, I personally don't use less than D rated. I am a springs kind of guy and added the 2,000 lb over-loads from Hellwig, they do their job when the load is added and I don't know they are there when driving MT. The height is a non issue most of the time like said if a semi fits ..... , where we camp low branches need to be watched.

I think once you switch you "would rather fight than switch" back.

The tires that I have picked out are: LTX A/S load range D @ 2469lbs per tire (I think that this is the correct rating), even if I stay with a TT these tires would be better than car tires for towing, don't you think? This seems to cover the 4150lb RAWR of my Crew-Max. I like the "semi trailer" gauge idea (just stay behind one and make sure that his roof dosen't come off) LOL.

Those tires should work great for you and your load no problem. And yes, you really should have a heavier tire for ANY heavy towing IMO.

Seriously on the height issue though; you really don't need to worry much anywhere other than the car wash or low hanging trees. We do a lot of camping in the mountains, and we have to watch the trees pretty close sometimes having to get the trimmers out.
