Question Brake controller - how to locate brakelight wire

I'm installing a Prodigy on a 99 Tacoma. All the wiring is done, with the exception of the stoplight switch wire I need.

I can easily find the stoplight switch (follow the pedal upwards), but I can't see how it would be possible to splice into the correct wire. There's just no room to work with, and no slack in the wires.

Has anyone been down this path, or have any suggestions?

I did this for my starter install. If you take the connector off of the switch, which is a challenge, you shouldn't have a problem getting at the right wire. The other option, and significantly easier, is to purchase the trailer brake wiring harness from toyota which has exposed wires to connect to. If you look in the drivers kick panel there will be a small 4 pin wire connector that includes a brake light signal wire. This is where the toyota harness connects. Could be a solution.

Good luck.

Jason - thanks!

I'll check with Toyota Parts to see about the connector you referred to. That would be an easy solution to my problem.

My alternative is to bring it to some shop just to have this one connection done, which I would obviously prefer to avoid.

This wiring harness would have been TOO easy ;-)

My local Toyota parts department has no knowledge of a plug-in adapter for the Tacoma that goes behind the kick-panel.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated!

I've tied into this wire in my wife's tacoma for the remote starter. Once I removed the connector from the switch, I was able to tap into the conductor.

Another option would be to trace the tail light wires along the driver's door sill and pull the brake light signal from there. That would be easy. The wire color should be in the diagrams in the member's area. I would expect the color would be consistent with the wires at the switch. (there could also be a relay in the middle.)

I was looking at your signature when I commented about the wire harness. That's a part for the tundra.
