Default Weight Distributing Hitch

Never used one. I'm getting an 18ft Toyhauler and pulling with my 05 Tundra DC. What's a good one to get and where?

Thanks

Hi Thumper,

After doing some forum searches, it seemed like the Equal-i-zer was a good weight-distributing and anti-sway hitch. You can see the product page at

http://www.equalizerhitch.com

I got mine from

http://www.rvwholesalers.com/

They had the best price of all the online vendors I checked. You'll want to order the hitch balls from them too. This hitch uses hitch balls that you will not find at your local hardware store. It requires hitch balls with a 2 1/4" long by 1 1/4" diameter threaded shank.

And now the fun part - for a 1 1/4" diameter shank, you need to torque the 1 7/8" nut down to 450ft-lbs. I took it to a truck shop, and they could not get their socket on it. I called Equal-i-zer and it turns out that they manufacture a special thin-wall 3/4" drive socket for this purpose. Their dealers have this socket, but this doesn't help me since I ordered online. Equal-i-zer sells the socket for $25 plus $6 shipping, so I ended up ordering one so I could swap between the 2" and 2 5/16" balls myself. If you are only ordering one ball, you might be able to ask RV Wholesalers to pre-install this for you. I also needed a 1/2"-to-3/4" drive adapter, and a 1 1/8" socket and wrench for the hitch head nuts/bolts.

I bought a regular (not thin wall) socket of the correct size; it was about 1/2" too long. I cut it down with a hack-saw, works like a charm.

Hi HotRod,

That would have been nice to know. Why was the socket too long? Was it binding at the bottom of the recess?

Sorry it took so long for me to reply, I couldn't figure out how to explain this. I ended up taking some photos of the socket and hitch. I have included a description of the issue in this photo:

I also have a few other photos in my gallery of the socket and hitch.

Great pics, HotRod! How many washers did you end up using between the shank and the hitch head? The manual says five is a good starting point, but that tilts the head down quite a lot.

My first of use will be for a rental trailer, so I'll be doing all this measuring and fine-tuning out in the rental store parking lot.

I used 5 washers. I initially had 4 when I originally set up the hitch head, before I actually got my trailer. I found that I didn't get enough weight transfer to the front wheels so I added the 5th washer.

Thanks for the info, Chrispitude! I saved well over $200 versus buying from my RV dealer by ordering my Equil-i-zer hitch from RVWholesalers.com. Plus I got the right tools for the installation from your directions.
