I just purchased an '02 SR5. It has the transmission cooler and some kind of wiring harness under the bed near the spare tire, but no hitch. Does that mean I'm just a hitch short of having the "tow package?" I'm sure this is an elementary question for most TS people out there, but I'm a new Tundra owner (first truck too) and would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Probably more than just a hitch short of the towing package on an '02. It all depends on exactly what that harness is under the truck. The '02 towing package included a hitch, a 4 pin trailer wiring connector and a converter box to convert the truck's 3 lamp (separate stop, turn, tail) system into a 2 lamp (combined stop and turn plus tail) system used by almost all trailers.
In any case, if you want to tow trailers that have electric brakes and/or need a charge wire to the trailer battery (like all travel trailers), you will still have to do a lot more wiring to hookup a brake controller and get a 12 V supply to the hitch area.

Is it a Limited? My dad's 2000 has a tow package with the transmission cooler and light hookup, but came without a hitch because they said that with the limited some how the hitch made it weight enough to become a gas guzzler or something so none of the limiteds came with the hitch from the factory. At least that's what the dealership told us.

gonna call b.s. on that one. Every single v8 tundra on the local yota lot has tow hitches on the factory sticker... including the limiteds. Your local lot just didn't order it with them so they could sell you one there.

I worked at a dealership for 8 years. You do not get it on the truck because it puts the truck over some weigth limit. Not sure which but one of them. You can add it afterwards which some dealerships do but it is not factory installed like other trucks. The window stickers can be modified by the dealership so they can add the hitch to the sticker.

I recently went through this in connection with the 2001 Tundra SR5 AC V8 TRD with "Factory Tow Package" that I bought. I was told that for 2000 - 2002, the "Tow Package" was not installed at the factory; but, instead the "Tow Package" was installed at the port of entry. Call 800-GO TOYOTA and ask for Customer Service, give them your VIN # and they can tell you what accessories were installed on your vehicle at the factory and at the port.
Also, contact the Toyota Dealer where you bought your Tundra or where you have it serviced. With the VIN #, the dealer can give you a printout of what options and packages were on your vehicle when it was first sold as new.
Toyota dealers also have a Source Book that shows for each year what equipment was standard on a particuler model, what options were available and what was included with each option package, such as the "Tow Package."
