Question 2000 Tundra Wiring Harness problems

I have a 2000 Tundra that came with hitch but no harness. I purchased a harness from UHaul (in 2001) that plugged into the factory wiring at the rear bumper and the fuse by the battery. It seemed to work fine for when I needed it in the day. I stopped using it and recently tried to tow a trailer at night. When I turn my lights (with or without the trailer hooked up) it blows the fuse at the engine compartment - and no trailer lights. It only does this when I turn on the lights. I went to Toyota thinking the TSB might fix the problem and they told me they couldn't help me since I used an aftermarket harness. Any ideas on what I can do to fix the problem? I don't want to buy a new harness only to find there's some other problem. Any one run into this problem?

I have not run into this problem, but I needed to tow a 16' bass boat recently and had a hitch on my 2000 Tundra Limited but had never towed anything. I was towing from MS to TX and needed trailer lights. When checking with the parts department @ Toyota of Dallas, I found that the 2000 Tundra had a 1st year issue and Toyota fixed this with a 2 part retro kit. The kit ran me about $90 but is SO easy to install. Here are the part numbers you will need if you want this setup. 08921-34860 and PT220-34012. Toyota of Dallas has an online parts website @ www.toyotapartsales.com. You can enter the part number in the part # section and get their internet price and order online. Very good prices from what I've found looking on the web. I live local to DFW and picked up my parts there, but they ship parts all over the US. If you need to call, ask for Barbara in "Internet Parts". Supper Nice and great Customer Service. They have another website @ www.trdparts4u.com where you can lookup very common parts. Their 800 phone numbers are (866-477-3398) and (800-784-4695).

The install is basically a converter box which mounts behind the drivers rear taillight and 2 seperate wiring harnesses. Measure, drill 2 holes and mount converter box. Plug in the included 8 pin and single pin wiring harness to the box. Run the harness through the bottom of the taillight section and over the frame and under the bed. Secure with enclosed plastic zip ties. Plug other end of harness into wiring harness already installed on your truck from the factory under middle rear of the bed just behind the hitch. Take 2nd wiring harness (PT220-34012) and plug into an "offshoot" connector of the first harness you just installed. Mount this 4 pin connector bracket to bracket mount on your hitch and your done. Plug in your trailer and go. No more blown fuses and nothing to touch under the hood.

Hope this helps.

Well it is definetly shorted somewhere to be blowing a fuse.
Most likely near the hitch at the connection point. I have seen some that were run close to a heat source and melted together or rubbed raw along the frame rail.
The wiring all used to work just fine for brake and turn signals? but unknown on tail lights as you use it during the day correct?
Need to test the wiring with power disconected fuse blow etc. Use a ohm meter and check each pin for a short to ground. Not sure on your set up but 1 pin should be a ground wire and the others are left turn right turn and running lights.
Hope this helps

I'm sitting on a set of six of these (both part numbers). Can't sell them here because I'm not a vendor (can't sell more than one at a time). I've got them up in egay and craigslist.

Can I say that? I did not put links.

PT220-34012 doesnt come up as anything. Is the entire kit under part number 08921-34860?

Here is a picture of PT220-34012, it has PT220-34012-0 on that white sticker that is on it. I have six of these and six of the 08921-34860.
