Just for grins, I turned off OD to see what would happen. Within several minutes the tranny temp started climbing. Once it hit 205 degrees, I turned off OD, within 10 minutes, the tranny temp was back to 165. So for me, with a 2001 Tundra, towing a 5,600 lb Outback down a perfectly flat freeway, towing with OD off is the way to go.
So if I understand correctly your temp went up while using OD and went back down to 165 once OD was turned off? Looks like that's what you might of meant.
Did you notice if while you were in OD if your torque converter ever locked up?

Thanks for the info.
You're welcome! Yes, that is what I meant. Hope I didn't anyone.

If you watch the tach. closely, you will see the RPM's drop by about 400 when the TC locks up.
My TC isn't locking as quickly as it used to (I've only had the truck for about 4 months and it just started doing this in the past couple of weeks). Could this be a sign of tranny problems?

That was a great post. I have a been wanting to purchase the exact same TT model, Outback 21rs, but was unsure about how my 2004 DC would handle it. Looks like it should be fine. Thanks! Great post!

No it's not a sign of tranny problems.
If you have the OD OFF, the torque converter will lock up. However, if you don't have the OD off & still in OD, the torque converter will NOT lock up as quickly.
This is perfectly normal and is quite a nice feature when towing. If you normally tow with OD off, when you come to a hill a lot of times you can push the OD button (thus unlocking the TC) & gain an extra 3-400 rpm's. Most of the time it keeps the tranny from downshifting.
This feature is also on my 07 when in S-4 the TC will lock, but when in S-5 or S-6 the TC will not lock up. I normally never tow in S-4 because of it, so i usually tow in S-5.
