Default Electric brake controllers

Not sure where this should be posted but here goes. Been reading threads about wiring brake controllers. From what I understand 2001 Tundras were not pre-wired for electric brakes. On my 2001 Tundra there is a socket with 5 wires up under the bed at the rear of the truck where the other end of the trucks standard flat 4 pin trailer plug cable is plugged into. In the cab down on the left there is a white socket that I thought was for brakes. It looks like the Tekonsha Prodigy harness for Tundra 2002 - 2003 would plug right in. This truck also has the 30 amp fuse marked "tow" connected to the + battery term. Is any of this stuff usable?
Thanks, John

Default Re: Electric brake controllers

It was my understaning that Tundras were not prewired till 03.

If you need to hardwire it(which I think you do) heres a simple explanation of the 4 wires that come off the brake controller.

Black= Positive. Make sure and run an inline fuse to the battery. Some people perfer to use a breaker.

White= Ground.

Blue= Electric brake feed to your 7 round(standard) connector at the rear of the truck.

Red= Brake light switch. Tap into the wire that gets hot when the brake pedal is pushed.

Now, heres an explanation of the 7 round plug(most people would use a 7 round) at the back of the truck. These are the colors on the inside of the plug(not the color of the wires you will be attatching to them!) Make sure you understand that!

Brown: Rt turn.
Green: Running.
Red: Left.
Black: Charge\Positive.
White: Ground.
Blue: Elec Brake.
Center post is reverse lights.

I went through this problem with my 02 tundra trd 4x4. I contacted the local toyota dealer and it took them 4 days to tell me that my truck would have to be hard wired. I have that white plug in my fuse box which did nothing. I took it 4 different places and they all said it would have to be hard wired. The cheapest place I found was my local UHAUL dealer. They wired it for 50$ and it took the guy about 4 and a half to five hours. They had a brake controller with a digital readout for 79.00 and with all the extras( I got the hoppy 7 way with a 4 flat on the side) was about 210.00. I am very happy with the job that was done at UHAUL. If you talk to the parts counter at Toyota they will tell you there is a plug that can be ordered for the '02 but the service department who was going to put it in said definately no.

Thumbs up Re: Electric brake controllers

hey I really appreciate everyone's comments....have a 2003 V6 longbed myself and would like to occasionally tow a lightweight enclosed trailer at low speeds with electric brakes, so I need to wire an electric brake controller. You folks have been talking about how the 2003 models may already be wired for electric trailer brakes, we just need to install the controller properly. As opposed to having to hard wire everything from scratch. Would you be so kind as to let me know if ALL 2003 tundras are pre-wired, and if they are, how I would go about installing the electric brake controller.
Much oblidged,
dave

Nope, not all '03s were wired for trailer brakes...only those that have the full factory tow package. It's easy to tell...if your '03 has (1) a hitch receiver under the bumper (the part the hitch inserts into), (2) a round 7-pin, electrical receptacle (with spring loaded cap) under the bumper and immediately to the left of the hitch receiver, and (3) an auxliary trans cooler in front of the radiator/AC condenser, then it has the the factory tow package and is already wired. If you're missing any of these items, then your truck did not have the tow package and may have had only the hitch option.

If you do have the full package, then the plug for hooking up the brake controller is behind the kick panel on the driver's side. Do a search and you'll find lots of guidance (and some pictures) of how to find this plug and connect your brake controller.

If you don't have the package, then you'll have to do the wiring yourself (or pay someone to do it) just like on the '02s and older.
