Default ??electric brake controller??

Can anyone suggest what type/brand of brake controller I should have installed on my truck? I have a 2000 Tundra with a heavy duty tow package. I will be pulling a 24 ft, 1997 Prowler, bumper pull with a GVWR of 5500 lbs.

I also have a small 2-horse, straight load, step up, bumper pull horse trailer, so I will need something that works for both.

Thanks,

Anne

Tekonsha Prodigy or Jordan Ultima are both excellent (and roughly equally priced).

Avoid like the plague any controller that's of the "time-delay" type. They're dangerous because they (1) require constant adjustment to even come close to what's needed as you drive and yet (2) will never, ever provide the truly right trailer braking under any circumstance. Most DrawTite controllers are of this kind. Only (dubious) advantage: they're a bit cheaper.

If you don't (and never will) do any mountain towing, the traditional "inertia" controllers (e.g. Tekonsha Voyager) are tolerable and are somewhat cheaper than the top of the line units like the Prodigy.

However, anyone who has ever had a time-delay or inertia controller and then upgraded to a Prodigy (or equivalent) will tell you in heart beat how much better the Prodigy is.

The difference in price between worst (any time delay) and best (Prodigy class) is only about $60. Spend the slight extra cash...it's worth it.

Ray,
Thank you for the great information. I'm going to look around for pricing on this controller.

They go for $100 @ rjays.com or rvwholesalers.com.
If you don't mind the wait you could snag one off ebay for $80-$90.
