Default Proper installation of McKesh mirrors

On the recommendation of the many experienced users here, I purchased a set of McKesh mirrors a while back. Ugly and a bit cumbersome, yes, but quite functional. I've used them a number of times in the past several years but I've never been able to achieve the rock-solid mounting that many of you claim. I'm wondering what it is I'm doing wrong. I cinch up the strap and lock down the mirror head just as tightly as I possibly can given the size and location of those wing nuts, but still I get some annoying vibration in the mirror. Where do ya'll place the padded foot on the support leg; what would be the optimum angle for the leg? I try to get it as close as I can to the top of the door trim, figuring that's where there'll be the least amount of inward deflection of the sheet metal. About the only other variable is where it's hooked in at the window. I put the brackets behind both sets of weatherstripping (if that's what you'd call it) so that the bracket is in contact with the window glass when it's rolled up. Is this how ya'll are mounting these things? I can't locate the instruction sheet though I'm sure I read it initially. Is there a secret to this or am I merely totally inept on this?

Thanks for any assistance.

Nope, not inept at all. I still haven't found a position that makes them as rock steady as the OEM side mirrors.

I tried the pad all the way up: way too much flex in the door there. I tried them all the way down: way too much flex in that long arm. I ended up with the pads just above the trim piece.

I started with the outside mirror as far out as I felt was safe. Great view, wiggly mirror. I moved it to an intermediate position. Acceptable view, more stable, but still more wiggle than I was willing to live with; especially at night. So now the mirrors are in until they just miss the OEM side mirrors.

With this setup, I get a stable mirror unless the road is bumpy and the mirrors bump with the road.

Also, ensure all of the mirror mounting hardware is tight: the bolts that hold the mirror on and also the set screws that keep the mirror from moving. I didn't notice those at first and tightening them helped.

Let us know how it goes.

Tom

Thanks, Tom. I appreciate the comments.
Good to know it's not just me. I'll be using the mirrors again in 2 or 3 weeks. I'll try bringing the mirrors in as far as I can while still being able to see what I need to behind me; shorten up that arm as much as possible. Maybe that'll help.
