I have found color combo finally and am looking forward to new Tundra. I found a 2wd white truck with gray interior and XS-P 3 package. Only problem is no towing package.
I tow a small pop-up camer that weighs about 2000lbs however I am also looking to buy a boat that probably comes in at around 4800lbs.
Am I correct in assuming that the most important item in the tow package is the trans oil cooler. After all most camper dealers can install a class 3 or 4 hitch and a 7 prong connector in a few hours. What about the tranny oil cooler? Can the dealer install one of these? If not any ideas on a brand to buy? Anybody out there tow without a tranny oil cooler??
What is purpose of the 130 amp alt that comes with the package?
Should I hold out to get a truck with a tow package; afterall the health and safety of the truck are more important than the color.
Doesn't sound like you're going to be towing anything super heavy. So, my take is that the tow package is optional for you...but on the other hand, if you can find another truck with the TO, get it.
On the trans cooler....that's the easiest of them all to remedy. I posted a "how to" on this in the drivetrain forum. Piece of cake.
On the hitch, yes, get a Class IV from Reese or Drawtite.
On the 7-pin, not so easy. Without the TO package, you will have to wire up a charge circuit (that includes some heavy gauge wire and a relay) and the brake control circuit (also invovles additional wiring). Let's see...another fella on the board tried to get the dealer to do it and they wouldn't...he had it done at the RV dealer. I posted a "how-to" on the conversion here in the towing forum.
Your boat will most likely come with Surge brakes...so no need for the 7-pin there. Electric brakes on the pop-up is probably overkill. If you do want brakes for that, you can get surge brake kits for around $300. I posted options on that in the towing forum.
On Toyota web site they list the tow package as an option however I have also heard that it is on all trucks now??? I have a call into the dealer.
Pop-up is not a problem; even without surge brakes. The boat weight looked to be close to a few limits, although not over them. It is nice for you to say "not towing anything very heavy".
From the info that I have been able to get on this site anything over 7000lbs in a no go. Between 6500 and 7000lbs is close; need to run a check list. I guess a few hundred pounds make a big difference. All depends on additional weight in truck and trailer.... gas, water, gear, stuff ...
It would solve the problem if tow package was installed.
And thanks for the follow up guys, I do a search for questions I have but do not always come up with the post needed to answer. Now I have them. Thanks again.
I tow a 2,000 lb popup trailer with my 4x4 tundra. It tows it great. BUT! I would make sure that you have breaks on your popup! You have so much more control with breaks. I have electric breaks and love them.
What is the max tongue weight on the 06 tundra DC when using a wd hitch?
Book the dealer gave me says 675lbs/ the dealerships computer says 720lbs and doesn't list a "with WD hitch" number???
I'm totally confused since this is a class IV hitch and should easily be able to handle 1000' of tongue wt.
Anyone know what the deal is here?
So with a class IV hitch I can only have 720lbs with a WD hitch? What do I have to get in order to tow my toy hualer with a hitch weight of over 900? Seems like most class IV hitches have a 1000lb limit..What is the deal with the toyota hitch only taking 720lbs?
Should I just buy another hitch that is rated for more? or is this a limit on the truck and not really the hitch?
Also, why doesn't toyota stamp on there hitches what its rated for?
