Default Towing Help

I have an 06 Tundra DC 4x4 with tow package. Owner Manual says the tow capacity is 6700 lbs. We are looking to buy a 29 Ft trailer with a dryweight of 5860 lbs. My feeling is that we're pushing the limits here and this might be too much for my truck to handle.

Can anyone give me some feedback on this?

Probably is, because you are going to wind up putting a bunch of stuff in the trailer and carrying stuff in the truck as well. If you haven't already, drop down and visit the "towing" section of this website. There are a number of websites devoted to RV'ing with a trailer; some of them have Excel spreadsheet programs for downloading that let you input your particulars and see how much you can carry and where the weight should be placed. The Airstream folks have their own website that has a lot of useful information for anybody that tows. If you haven't been into towing in a serious way before, you need to learn about CGVW, Payload, GVW, Towing Capacity (and what it really means), Tongue Weight, sway control, load distributing, etc. The closer to max you tow, the more important all this becomes. To tow a couple thousand pounds, it's pretty much "hook up and go - just make sure you got some decent tongue weight".

The above advice is good.

It sounds like you'll be pushing close to the max trailer towing capacity of the Tundra, but IMHO that's a fairly conservative number. Many trucks have very high trailer tow ratings, but you're hard-pressed to actually tow that much when you take into consideration the payload capacity. For example, the Titan is rated to tow 9,200# but only has a payload capacity of 1,200#. Good luck towing a 9,200# trailer without blowing the max payload. Your Tundra on the other hand has a 1,600# payload capacity which you should be able to stay under fairly easily with what you're towing.

I needed to add supersprings" to my 04 to stop bottoming out with the 3200# boat with a hitch weight of 200#'s and about 550#'s in the bed. now with red TRD shocks and the supersprings no bottoming out and great cornering w/wo trailer or loaded. Also the tire change from the HT crap to michelins improved ride and traction. I am not in the market for a new one yet, but Toyota needs to do homework on tires and suspension, just too lite for me.

This should be posted in the towing forum, Tom Hole should be around and possibly move it and answer your question in detail.
