I am looking to buy an open car trailer to tow my 1967 Land Cruiser FJ40 that weighs about 4,300 lbs. I am looking for a 7,000 lb trailer with electric brakes, any sugestions? My tow vehicle is a 2007 Tacoma Double Cab, I have used it to tow my Land Cruiser several times with a Uhaul trailer. It tows great, plenty of pulling power for my land cruiser, even up pretty steep grades. It stops well, but I am pretty sure maintained electric brakes would work much better than the hydraulic uhaul brakes though. Would two braking axles be worth the extra money?
Wow, that's quite a bit of weight on the uhaul trailer. Those things aren't light...
I would believe that brakes on a dual axle trailer would be ideal. The only thing that I'd have to mention is that you would need to be meticulous with the trailer brakes' maintenance.
I'm sure that someone who is much more experienced with towing will chime in soon.

Dual axle brakes I think would have better performance than a single, plus theres reassurance if one were to fail or have fade. Wow, those LC's are tanks arent they? If you have some extra dough Id suggest to get a aluminum trailer which would cut the weight down of the trailer considerably. They cost a bit more, but since you are looking at getting close up to the max tow capacity, and towing it what sounds to be regularly, it would be worth the extra cost.

Thanks for your feedback. I will be going with the dual braking axles for sure. I looked at Aluminum trailers but they are almost double the price and the Tacoma handles the weight very well as is. I know it is cutting it close but I am under the towing cap., GCWR, and GVWR. Also, my Tacoma is my daily driver so I don't want to upgrade to a full size.
Big Tex trailers has what you're looking for, they are in Beaumont Ca, i'm looking at getting an open trailer myself and this is where i'm gonna be getting mine from, they are good people there and they take care of you.

What is the cost of the trailers you are looking at there? I almost bought a Carson car trailer on Thursday for $2,350.00 out the door at Jacks Trailer in Castro Valley, CA. It was 16'x82" with a single braking axle.
you're lookingat pretty much the same price for that setup, you can check out their web site to find a dealer near you, they are able to discount the trailers at the dealership, i'm getting a 2000.00 trailer for 1750.00
This pic shows a Jeep using these tie downs still attached to the trailer after the tow vehicle rolled on I-15 coming back from Moab. Yes, everybody is OK.
I have had a crason trailer for 5 years now and ahve put close to 100k worth of towing with it and it is still going strong. I paid 1650 OTD in 2002. It only has brakes on one axle and with my Dodge that I had befroe teh tundra the brakes were not realy needed but with the tundra and 5000lbs on it the trailer stops just fine. I like only haveing one breaking axle because in bad weather if one axle locks up then the trailer will not pass you. I often tow in the snow now that I live in NY
Hope this helps
Jeff

I tow a jeep with a 16' Big Tex 60CH (brakes on one axle only) with a 2003 tundra A/C. Tows and STOPS good. Trailer weighs 1700lbs and the Jeep weighs 3700lbs. Trailer retails in the Dallas Texas area for $ 2,200. The factory is in Mount Pleasant Texas about a 2 hour drive from my house. Cost of the trailer out the door including tax and license $ 1,350 from their direct dealer. You might also want to consider going out to a rual area to purchase your trailer. They are generally much cheaper than in a metroplex area.
