This is my first post. Wanted to say hello and get some opinions about the new Tundra.
I have been reading about the new Tundra the last couple of weeks. I traded a 2000 Tundra for a chevy dually crewcab in 2003 when I bought a new boat. It's a 22' aluminum deck boat that wieghs about 4000#. The tundra I had downshifted a lot out of overdrive on the highway. Also my mileage dropped down below 10mpg. I believe in overkill when it comes to towing. Big and powerfull is better!
The dually tows very well (but it's tiresome as a daily driver). It gets about 14mpg towing at 65mph and never drops out of overdrive. It gets about 17mpg mixed (city and higway) when not towing. I would like to go back to a gasser and get away from the deisel.
I've been waiting for Toyota to come out with a bigger and better truck. This looks like it. Power, transmision, rear end, brakes, and I like the features such as traction and skid control.
So after that windy intro, here is the question. Do you think the new Tundra 5.7 and 6 speed trany will stay in overdrive while towing half it's rated capacity. Also if anyone has seen an owners manual it would be nice to know what it says. Thanks for any info.
Maybe. I don't worry too much about staying in overdrive. It's a gas saving gear, so if I'm not in it while towing, that's ok. Did you trade your Tundra in on a diesel dually just for that? Prolly not, but had to ask.
Anyway, if the 2007 does shift out of OD while towing, just turn OD off. I've always wondered why folks make that a criteria for a good tow.

I'am always looking for an excuse to get new toys. So that was one reason. The floor was getting pretty hot and the gas was costly driveing to some of the lakes that where an hour or two away. I went to look at a 3/4 ton but the last one on the lot at that time had just been sold. They just kept makeing it a sweeter and sweeter deal (on the dually) until I couldn't pass it up.

I just have the mindset that if you have to turn it off and run the rpm up and such, that it isn't strong enough for your needs. I prefer overkill, and I think of overdrive as an indicator.
For those that have towed with the 07, how did it do? What did you tow (and wieght)? Any problem with fishtailing? Did the tongue wieght drop the rear? And most of all, did it stay in OD, or did it hunt? If you take it out of OD, do you loose 1 gear or 2? Anything else interesting? Thanks for your response.
07 what? Tacoma or Tundra? The 07 Tundra has a tow/haul button so you don't have to worry about the whole OD debate. Tacoma says in the manual to tow in D which allows overdrive to kick in if the computer thinks it's ok. In anycase you always should drive and "shift" according to the conditions at hand.

Sorry, I spent so much time in the Tundra forum, I forgot to specify. I am interseted in the new Tundra. I am mostly curious as to how much it will handle until it starts hunting and dropping out of OD on slight to moderate inclines. From what I've encountered with tow/haul modes is they will hold it in gear until you reach higher RPM ranges, but they haven't seemed to make much difference in keeping a vehichle in OD. I think if a vehichle won't stay in overdrive, I would look at needing more power. Plus it will empty the gas tank in a hurry. Thanks for you response.
A local dealer let me pull my box trailer with their demo. Comparison will be coming from an 2005 GMC 2500crew cab 4x4 Duramax. The trailer is around 6500 lb it is a 8.5' x 12' box trailer. I took it on about 15 mile trip. Some stop and go and some interstate. Pulled a hill that drops most big truck to about 45 from their running speed (posted 55) no one runs that. On the back side of the cut I turned around got back on at the base of the hill and the truck zipped up to 65-70 before the end of the on ramp. I did not notice the truck hunting for gears and it had plenty left for a bigger load. I would dare say with tha t load it out pulled the Diesel. I am not saying with a heavy load the Tundra will out pull a diesel but in this case I think it did. I have owned several diesels all brands so that is what I am bassing this off of.
I now own one and will be towing with it next week. Gonna put about 1200 miles pulling 5000-8000 LB not sure how much gear I will have yet.

I will let you guys know when I get back.
That is bada$$ impressive.....Duramax? no way !!!!!
Sweet !!!!!!!!! From what you are saying, i will be very happy with the way my 07 tows compared to my 02 AC?
Which overdrive are you interested in? The 6 speed has 2. I doubt it will stay in the .5 OD when towing and I think tow/haul mode doesn't use .5 OD.
Tom
After driving my 07, i would venture to say that i will be able to tow my toyota epic 22 boat in 5th without a problem. My 02 AC towed it in overdrive @ 70-80 mph & got close to 16 mpg doing it.
The boat dry weight is 2900 lbs then add the trailer, gas, & other. I figure it would be pretty close to 3900 lbs.
This new truck is very torquey at low rpms. You know, you have 90% of 401 ft/lbs torque at 2400 rpms (361 lb/ft.). And at 70 mph in 5th gear you are running 2400 r's.
I took my first trip this weekend with the loaded trailer (two-horse slant aluminum w/ 1 horse and considerable gear.) The trailer, loaded, weighed in at about 4,300. It pushed the rear end down about 2"; I picked about 1.5" inches of that back up when I snapped up the spring bars on the W/D hitch. In the truck were me, my wife, daughter, a little miscellaneous cargo, and a full tank of fuel. The whole rig weighed in at 10,880; the truck's front and rear axle weights were virtually equal, so I think the W/D is set up just about right.
We headed from our home on the coast to "the valley", about a 90 mile trip, one way, going on some curvy mountain road, along with three or four medium length, 4-5% grade pulls. I set the truck in "tow/haul" mode. There was virtually no hunting, and the truck pulled smooth and true all the way. The low end torque and overall power of this truck are the real deal. Compared to my '02 AC, this thing has power to burn. No problem maintaining 60 up the grades, and there was throttle to spare.
The best thing: the brakes on this thing are just tremendous. With live cargo, you want smooth and sure, and they are all of that.
The only issue I have is that the rear end feels a little soft, so the overall handling is just OK, not great. I'm thinking the addition of the Roadmaster AS to the rear end, when available, and this thing might be just about perfect.
Towed my 26' 5500lbs trailer up a long 7% grade south of Paso Robles, CA this past weekend. Cruise Control was set on 65mph and the truck didn't have to work at all to maintain that speed. I pushed the throttle manually just to see what she had left a couple times and there was so much residual power I let it back off to the cruise control after a few seconds. I love this truck-

rogersja63 Do you like the Mirrors? I might not be able to get the tow mirrors in my area and was wondering how the regular ones are with a trailer. I have a 21 foot Artic Fox Camper.

Thanks
They work pretty good, I can see the far corners of the trailer in them. I can't see behind the trailer at all so I've ordered the tow mirrors through the dealer for the added visability. The regular mirrors were nearly a deal breaker when I bought the truck so they're getting them for me at cost. I'll miss the auto dimming and retractable features of the Limited mirrors though.
