NASCAR.COM - Bodine holds off Busch to repeat in Daytona opener - Feb 14, 2009
[QUOTE]
Kyle Busch figured a well-timed bump would be all it took to get
Todd Bodine up the track and out of the way.
Turns out, all Busch did was give Bodine the momentum he needed to win and -- hopefully -- the boost his Germain Racing team needs to survive.
Bodine used Busch's friendly tap to take the season-opening Camping World Truck Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Friday, becoming the first repeat winner in the event's 10-year history.
"My philosophy is make them pass you, so get the lead and do what you can to hold them off," Bodine said.
Nobody did over the last few laps as Bodine picked up his fourth consecutive win in a restrictor-plate race, with each victory coming in the same No. 30 Toyota.
"I think they take that thing home and put mothballs over it," said
Terry Cook, who finished third.
The win was an emotional one for Bodine, who was third in last year's points race behind
Johnny Benson and
Ron Hornaday. Bodine appeared to be all set to go for a full schedule in 2009 until a major sponsored pulled out two months ago.
Germain Racing has been scrambling to find a new investor, and Bodine hopes taking the checkered flag at possibly the biggest race of the season will help.
"I guess you could say it was dire straits," Bodine said. "We've got to get a sponsor to continue for the season."
Busch, who won three Truck races while running a part-time schedule last year, waited until the last lap to make his move. He tried to go low while getting into Turn 1 and didn't make it, then decided a little nudge into Bodine's bumper would do the trick.
"The plan was to knock Todd out of the way, get to Turn 3 and get his rear tires off the ground and get him to move up the track," Busch said. "All that did was shoot him further ahead. ... I still don't think I would have beat him, but I probably could have made a better finish out of it."
Bodine saw Busch in his rearview mirror and knew the move would come. When it did, he simply made his truck as wide as possible and held on.
"He did hit me, got me a little sideways, but [it] corrected right back," Bodine said. "The truck is so stable, it corrected right back. I never even got out of the throttle."
Benson finished 26th after getting caught in a nine-truck pileup about halfway through.

No Daytona winner has gone on to take the season title. Bodine would love to break the streak, if he can find enough cash to run the entire schedule.
The future is a bit brighter after his win, but it came after the veteran became the first driver of the year to break one of the circuit's new rules. Bodine was sent to the pits for a penalty after dipping below the double-yellow line to make a pass.
No matter. He quickly worked his way back through the field and took over late to collect his 16th career Truck victory. Now Bodine hopes he has all season to chase the next one.
"We're going to go as long as we can go financially," Bodine said. "It takes a lot of money to run these trucks, just like the rest of the series. To come out of your own pocket is hard."

All in all, a good start to the season. Toyota finishes 1-2-3 and takes 6 of the top 10 spots.
