Toyota's North American Vehicle Production Surpasses 1.55 Million Units in 2005

Vehicle Production Increases Eight Percent; Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc.'s production tops 509,000 units

01/16/2006 Erlanger, KY
Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, Inc. (TMMNA) announced today that the company produced 1,558,828 vehicles and 1,295,227 engines at its North American manufacturing facilities in 2005. Both figures represent new record production levels for Toyota, which began North American production in 1985 and has been growing ever since.

As part of Toyota's localization efforts in North America, TMMNA made the following announcements in 2005:

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia, Inc. (TMMWV) announced a $120 million expansion of its engine and transmission plant while boosting employment by 150. It will build 240,000 additional automatic transmissions per year. (April)

Bodine Aluminum announced a $40 million expansion of its Jackson, Tennessee facility. The expansion will allow Bodine to cast aluminum cases and housings for additional transmissions at TMMWV. Employment increased by 20. (May)

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK) announced plans to produce Toyota's first hybrid in North America – the Camry hybrid – starting in late 2006. (May)

Canadian Autoparts Toyota, Inc. (CAPTIN) announced a $31.6 million expansion to produce 1.68 million aluminum wheels per year. (June)

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Inc. (TMMC) announced a $650 million investment to build a new vehicle manufacturing plant in nearby Woodstock, Ontario to employ 1,300. The plant will build the Toyota RAV4 starting in 2008. (June)

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, Inc. (TMMTX) announced an additional $50 million investment and 50,000 capacity unit increase; total investment of $850 million and total capacity of 200,000 units. (August)

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama, Inc. (TMMAL) began production of V6 engines following an investment of $20 million and an additional 150 jobs. (August)

Bodine Aluminum began engine block production at its new Jackson, Tennessee plant with a $164 million investment and 220 employees. Bodine will eventually cast about one million engine blocks annually. (November)

In 2006, the following projects will come on line:

TMMAL will expand to increase V8 engine production. Once complete, the plant will have 800 team members and investment will total $490 million. Production is scheduled to begin in late 2006.

TMMWV will begin producing gears for automatic transmissions that will add 50 employees and a $80 million investment. Production is scheduled to begin sometime in 2006.

TMMK will begin production of the next generation Camry in February and Toyota's first hybrid produced in North America – the Camry hybrid, later this year.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (TMMI) and TMMTX will begin production of the next generation Tundra later this year.

In addition to the above mentioned plants, Bodine Aluminum, Inc., in Jackson, Tennessee and Troy and St. Louis, Missouri, cast aluminum parts such as cylinder heads, intake manifolds and engine blocks. TABC, Inc. in Long Beach, California, manufactures truck beds, catalytic converters, coated substrates and steering columns, along with Hino Trucks. Canadian Autoparts Toyota, Inc. (CAPTIN) in Delta, British Columbia, produces aluminum wheels.

By 2008, Toyota will have the annual capacity to build 1.81 million cars and trucks, 1.44 million engines, and 600,000 automatic transmissions in North America. The company's direct employment is 38,000, with direct investment of nearly $16.3 billion. In addition, Toyota's annual purchasing of parts, materials, goods and services from North American suppliers totals more than $26 billion. Toyota's North American-produced vehicles include the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Matrix, Sienna, Solara, Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra, and the Lexus RX330.
