Truck Bed Tonneau CoversDiscussions about Truck Bed Tonneau Covers.
This is a discussion thread titled "Just got a BakFlip Tonneau Cover and love it", within the Truck Bed Tonneau Covers forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
My name is Julian Maimin and I am the owner of BAK Industries.
After reading many comments and questions on this site about BakFlip, I thought I would share the most up to date information on BakFlip G2 with all of you.
After sending out a few thousand BakFlip G1 covers between Feb and June of this year, we unfortunately came to find out that many of the components used were ultimately failing. This was largely a result of defective rubber seals / 3M adhesive combination which we only found out about due to failures in the market. There were a few issues with gas struts as well on the G1, which put an uneccessary amount of strain on the covers, but the seals seemed to be the primary plaguing issue.
After much hair pulling, frustration and effort, I, along with my key staff sat down and decided to re-engineer the BakFlip from top to bottom, rather than try to put a bandage on the G1. The result is the BakFlip G2 which we introduced late in July of this year.
The new G2 is a far more robust product. The first change made was to the seals. Rather than rely on adhesives, we redesigned the panel frames to accommodate a rubber seal that applied with a tongue and groove design. Kind of like a lock and key. The rubber is fed onto the frames and has resulted in a superb finish which is as strong as nails and absolutely cannot fail.
Next we got away from having to use any tools. All you need now is a single wrench. The install is far shorter and the components used are professional grade knobs etc.
We also changed the Aluminum on the cover, adding 28% more aluminum. The result is heavier panels. In addition the aluminum panel frames have no tape under them. The design underneath encompasses integrated drains, rendering the G2 almost 100% water-tight.
The gas struts never did lock properly on the G1 and as mentioned, put unecessary strain on the unit. We therefor changed to a locking arm-stay on each side. This puts no pressure on the cover and will also keep the cover locked in place so you can drive with it open.
The latches under the cover are now modular. They can be slid fom side to side which allows a real tweaking of the locking feature if required.
All in all, the new BakFlip G2, although similar looking in appearance, has undergone a complete overhail. The result is a phenominal cover that will surely walk away with most awards in it's category this year at SEMA.
I invite all of you to review it and share your comments and suggestions with me at my personal e mail address : julian@bakliner.com
I'd like to leave you with an assurance that I, along with my entire coimpany is 100% dedicated to producing the finest truck bed covers on the market. If we are not, I need to hear about it. I believe in this new G2 with all of my being and trust that you will as well.
Thank you all for the support you've shown over the years and thank you for your honesty. It's allowed us to make a brilliant product.
Kindest regards,
Julian Maimin - CEO

Hi Julian,
I've seen some companies doing "group buys" on these forums where they give a discount for the first 20 people or so that reply to the post. Any chance we can have that for these? This would be a great way for those on the fence about buying the G2. Those that buy from here would also more than likely put up posts on how they like 'em.

Anyone else with bedliners having the same problems with the G2 bakflip? I have a factory installed bedliner on my 08 DC regular bed Tundra...
I really liked how bakflip took initiative to read through this forum, solved the problem (or at least tried their best to solve the problem), and wrote back...shows their commitment to customer satisfaction. If there are no other cases of leak problems for bedlined trucks, I'm probably going to get one too. Ima wait a few more weeks for more comments.
You fix the problem or the leaks?Because i don't.

This is so strange, because I still have no problem with leaks....I might be jinks-ing myself with this!

Oh yeah, the ones that shoot high pressure water from the side, those raise the seal and water gets in....but I doubt there's a low profile cover out there that won't in those conditions. Undercover doesn't count...it goes over the whole edge and is in a different category.
On the other hand, when I wash it myself, no problem at all.

The back flip looks like a nice piece. I went with the undercover only because it cost me $585 shipped to Idaho.I will add that I am very pleased with the fit and finish. With all the diff. type and brands it is a hard choice.
I must of emailed 4 times about the issues with my Bakflip. I never received an answer. Being that my warranty was about to expire, I called them directly. I spoke with Lauren in the warranty dept, and she requested me to email some photos detailing the issues I was having. She responded the next day stating that Bak would replace my Gen 1 with the new G2 product free of charge. Pretty stand up thing to do. The thing is you have to call them; they will not answer emails at all. I expect to see my new cover in the next couple of weeks. After I install, I will post a follow up on how it goes and if there are any problems with the G2. I notice most of the complaints are from the Tundra owners. Here are some photos of what was wrong with my cover. I had rust, and anything that was glued to the cover kept falling off. The cover wasn't even a year old.
Yeah, man that sucks...the G2 looks much better, don't worry.

Just installed my Bakflip G2 today, and am pretty happy so far. Was a breeze to install, quality looks great. Will see how it stands up. The leaking issue doesn't bother me as I am only looking for the tonneau to offer security, not waterproofness. I use the box, it has rhino liner in it, and I figure it'll get wet and dirty over time.
Think it took me and a buddy about 15 mins to have it setup and installed. Now I need some heat/sun to get the seals to flatten by the hinges.

Check my posts, I used a torch, worked awesome! Installed New Bakflip G2 cover
By the way...I have extra aluminum brackets made up for dropping your bed rails if you guys need some...

If you have a large item can you leave lets say 2 of the panels folded and drive like that. Does it have to be completely closed to drive. Seems like the wind could catch it and flip it back.

Nope...actually each panel is pretty heavy and the cab breaks the wind pretty good. The panel lies down flat also...

I just installed mine a week ago and so far, I'm very pleased with it. I do have a question for you all though.
Do you have a latch at every joint? On mine, I have a latch at the very tail (last) section but not at the next one. Then a latch at the other two joints. Seems like this un-latched joint compromises the security of the cover. I can get my fingers under the cover at that point and lift it a little. If I had a pry bar I could easily break the cover (I'm not going to try and prove this). I'm wondering if somehow they forgot to install the latches on mine.
