Default Any Reviews on the New Bakflip G2 v.s older version?

The previous version of the Bakflip seemed to have many problems. The advertisement states they have addressed and fixed these issues.

Anyone have or seen the new G2 version?

Bump for this. I'm interested in getting the new one... did they get all the kinks out of the old one?

Hello all,

My name is Julian Maimin and I am the owner of BAK Industries.

After reading many comments and questions on this site about BakFlip, I thought I would share the most up to date information on BakFlip G2 with all of you.

After sending out a few thousand BakFlip G1 covers between Feb and June of this year, we unfortunately came to find out that many of the components used were ultimately failing. This was largely a result of defective rubber seals / 3M adhesive combination which we only found out about due to failures in the market. There were a few issues with gas struts as well on the G1, which put an uneccessary amount of strain on the covers, but the seals seemed to be the primary plaguing issue.

After much hair pulling, frustration and effort, I, along with my key staff sat down and decided to re-engineer the BakFlip from top to bottom, rather than try to put a bandage on the G1. The result is the BakFlip G2 which we introduced late in July of this year.

The new G2 is a far more robust product. The first change made was to the seals. Rather than rely on adhesives, we redesigned the panel frames to accommodate a rubber seal that applied with a tongue and groove design. Kind of like a lock and key. The rubber is fed onto the frames and has resulted in a superb finish which is as strong as nails and absolutely cannot fail.

Next we got away from having to use any tools. All you need now is a single wrench. The install is far shorter and the components used are professional grade knobs etc.

We also changed the Aluminum on the cover, adding 28% more aluminum. The result is heavier panels. In addition the aluminum panel frames have no tape under them. The design underneath encompasses integrated drains, rendering the G2 almost 100% water-tight.

The gas struts never did lock properly on the G1 and as mentioned, put unecessary strain on the unit. We therefor changed to a locking arm-stay on each side. This puts no pressure on the cover and will also keep the cover locked in place so you can drive with it open.

The latches under the cover are now modular. They can be slid fom side to side which allows a real tweaking of the locking feature if required.

All in all, the new BakFlip G2, although similar looking in appearance, has undergone a complete overhail. The result is a phenominal cover that will surely walk away with most awards in it's category this year at SEMA.

I have posted a video of the G2 on YouTube at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/v/NWH0r7gAjsc

I invite all of you to review it and share your comments and suggestions with me at my personal e mail address : julian@bakliner.com

I'd like to leave you with an assurance that I, along with my entire coimpany is 100% dedicated to producing the finest truck bed covers on the market. If we are not, I need to hear about it. I believe in this new G2 with all of my being and trust that you will as well.

Thank you all for the support you've shown over the years and thank you for your honesty. It's allowed us to make a brilliant product.

Kindest regards,

Julian Maimin - CEO

That video did an awesome job demonstrating the Backflip!

For a Tundra Crew Max are their 4 panels? or 3? I beleive its a 5.5ft bed.

The CrewMAx has 3 panels, since it's so short. See attached pics.

I have the G2 - had it a few weeks now. I was concerned about the Bakflip after the poor reviews of the G1 version, but spoke at length with the salesman at Realtruck (who also sells a realtruck-branded version of the bakflip G2) about the new design and materials, and he convinced me to give it a try.

I typically do not post good reviews, as like most people, I only put forth my time to complain about things

However, I do like the G2 a lot. The install was not quite as effortless as the video, as it did take me a few tries to get it aligned properly. But, now that it's on there, it fits like a glove, opens and closes/latches effortlessly, looks nice, doesn't rattle, and is almost completely waterproof. The only water I've noticed getting into the bed comes in 2 ways:
1. the tailgate end of the support rails/water channels, which is open - if I'm parked on an uphill slope the water runs backwards, away from the drain tubes, hits the inside of the tailgate and runs directly out of the bed -- no problem there.
2. there is a piece of felt cloth on the underside of the first hinge that wicks water from the drain channel and drips into the bed. It is a miniscule amount of water that can be wicked over a period of time, so is no big deal, but I may remove that entirely.

The brackets used to drop your rail system are plain, unfinished aluminum. I primed them and sprayed them with black, textured rustoleum brand paint and now they look very similar to my line-x liner.

All in all, a good product. From what I understand about the G1 version (which I would not buy), this is vastly improved.

Got my G2 yesterday.

And I am not pleased. I read many reviews of the newer G2 BakFlip which has been revamped and ordered one. I liked the look- a coworker had the G1 which had some of the issues that I read on many reviews.

Anyway, so I order the damn thing from bakflip-tonneau.com. I live in Hawaii so I get a email from autoaccessories.com (which is connected with bakflip) stating I need to pay $200 shipping. Fine. I was expecting that. What I was NOT expecting was the crap reply service. None of my emails were responded to. I asked for an invoice showing the $200 shipping. No response. I asked when the F I was going to get the cover. No response. I asked for a tracking number. No response. Nothing is wrong with my internet or my email program. I replied each time to the email address the original invoice stated.

Ok.

So it gets delivered. Few things Mr. Julian.

1. The instructions absolutely suck. Whoever made it, needs to redo it. The pictures are too dark, some of the pictures aren't sized RIGHT and COVER parts of the instructions. It looks like a rush rush job to get the instructions out, seriously.

2. The rubber seals that run along the edge of the top of the truck seriously look like crap. Both sides jut up in many spots and it really looks damn cheap.

3. My box was missing a piece that has the round top that screws into the extension plate. So now, my cover doesn't align properly.

I will post pictures later tomorrow. This **** pisses me off.

I'm sure you've cooled off by now. If not...

re: #2 - give it a few days. The rubber is taking on that shape because of how it was folded up during shipping. After a few days on the truck, the rubber will relax and be just fine. Mine was the same, now it's fine.

# 1 & 3 are pretty trivial. It's easy enough to install, so what if the instructions aren't nicely printed and leatherbound. And if you call, they'll probably apologize and send you the missing piece.

Talking Re: Any Reviews on the New Bakflip G2 v.s older version?

Yes I have cooled off.

I was more pissed about the service from where I got it. Funny thing, today of all things, I get a tracking number from them. Like 2 days AFTER its delivered. Whatever.

About the rubber. A friend who has the G1 said the same thing and said that in time the rubber will flush down and look right. Fine.

Instructions: Regardless if its easy to figure out without the manual or the video it should be clear, period. Not everyone is mechanically inclined. If you read my post, the instructions had some text that you couldn't read because the pictures (dark ones too) were 'covering' the text. I want it installed right and not 'oh ok this should work.' I don't want this cover flying off because common sense tells you that this clamp goes here and it does. I want the instructions to direct me. So when the ****ing thing flies off I can say I followed the print. If I spent 600-800 bucks on something, I would expect the intructions to be on target.

I really wanted this cover. So I ordered it. And waited. It didn't take THAT long. I just wanted better service from the sender. Plus add the missing bolt, and the rubber jutting out at the sides plus the instructions it would equal frustration. Oh and add a 10 year old stepson tantrumming 10 feet from you I think you'd lose it too.

One thing I'd like to make very clear: Auto Accessory distributors, who you claim to be affiliated with BAK is DEFINITELY NOT. We in no way are the same company and one has absolutely nothing to do with the other. The only thing they do is sell our products, along with lots of others through autoaccessoriesgarage.com . I will say unequivocally, that had you called BAK directly or e mailed any of my staff, you would have been contacted immediately or handled at the time of initial contact in the most professional manner possible. Please do not confuse BAk with some internet retailer who doesn't return calls in a prompt fashion. You're welcome to call us any time for tech assistance, pdf's or videos that will assist with any install issues you may have.

Again, the video on youtube or google video "Bakflip G2" should be better than any other install manual out there.

With this said, I wish you well with the G2. It truly is a great product and I am sure you will agree after you've had it a while.

All the best,

Julian Maimin
