Smile G2 Bakflip installed on Crewmax w/pics and small review

Well I got my bakflip last night and decided to pull it out of the box and see how it looked and looked like a simple easy install after peeking at the instructions, so I decided to go for it last night since I pulled it out of the box. Started by removing my rail system which I thought was not what I needed to do and the rail would install some how onto the rail system but it did not work that way, it comes with relocation plates to move the rail system down so in my case was a issue since I had cut my bedrug last week to fit it in place with my rail in stock location. Oh well learning curve there, so if anyone does a bedrug and cuts it to fit as the instructions show you send me the scrap peices please, well just the right and left sides.

I still have not re-installed my rail system since I wanted to paint the metal plates they send to relocate the rail black before putting them back on this weekend but that should be easy to do from what I see. Their solution was no more than copying someone on this forums idea of relocating the rail system lower but it should work fine, I just wished I knew that before hand and did kinda expected more from the money spent for this thing.
I also just finished with the drain tubes tonight too, I followed another members idea on that too and used 90deg. elbows tha converted the 3/4 tube to 1/2 tubing and it worked out great.

On to quality, I have to say it looks like its pretty well build and only time will tell. I also had mix feeling before I got it in my hands due to all the negative things I read here and there about the bakflip, I did decide to give them a try anyhows since there were a few good posts about it too and this is the G2 version opposed to the original version that seemed to have gotten the worst of the reviews. I also wanted to look of the bakflip and how it sits low betwen the bed rails. Also be sure ot give the top a day in the sun to help flatten out the rubber molding on the edges and it sits all flat now. As for how water tight not sure yet waiting for a good rain day that I can check things out but it does look by the way its design that it do well for keeping out rain in general unless up pull out the power washer and hit it in the corners.

Okay enough of my yammer on to the pics cause I know thats what everyone likes.

Just the toys in the driveway that I thought I share since I took this the other day too, hope you all enjoy....

Talking Re: G2 Bakflip installed on Crewmax w/pics and small review

Well completed the install this weekend after painting the relocating brackets for the rail system and also completed the drain tube setup
Oh I did replace the 10 (1/4" X 1") bolt that they sent with the kit, They were just to long so then I would loose use of the slide function of the stock cleats, I got 1/4" X 1/2" bolts from Lowes and that solved this issue before I bolted everything together.

Here are the picture, let me know what you think.

I used plastic dip spray paint since its a nice matte finish and looks good.

Completed install:

Oh you don't by chance have the rail system and cut around them when you installed yours ? if you did by chance do you still have the left over peices ? I like to get my hands on them since I had to relocated my rails with the G2 and now wish I knew that before I tossed mine in the trash a few weeks ago. So if any one has these let me know I pay shipping for your trash.

It looks to me like you lose the functionality of the rail system with this cover. If you tie something down tight it looks like those brackets they supply to lower the rails will just bend right in; is that the case?? I hope not because I was planning on getting one of these. Also what's the deal with the drain tubes, are they running all the way down to the bed?

I did a quick test with my body weight and tugged and pushed on the rail system once it was installed cause that was my concern too but it darn solid the whole truck moves and no bending. Now if you use the bolts they supply with the kit you will loose ability to slide the cleats from end to end (bolts too and this blocks the cleats) but if you did like me and replace them with just slightly shorter bolts it will allow you full use of the rail system, think I spent under $2.00 for replacement bolts.

As for the brain lines in the orginal pic they were just sitting in the bed cause I need to get 90deg. elbow adpaters and smaller tubbing. It is routed into the beds exisitng holes and under the truck and I have the ends zipped tied off toward the bottom of the bed to allow water to flow out. I can not take credit for this idea it was from another member here that I saw that posted about it. Actually think that were Bakflip stole the idea about the relocating brackets too.

I have the exact cover and almost the exact same truck! Like the bakflip for security and also the ease of hauling. I am upset though because those rubber pieces on the sides are constantly coming lose in various spots and needing re-glued. Think the quality could have been a little better. I have had my in the car wash many times and it lets a little water in here and there, but not that much. Good luck with it.

No cover is 100% water tight. I've also got the Bakflip and it's "reasonably" water tight. I hose it down when washing my Cmax and might find a drop or two of water inside the bed.

thanks for the post. I really like this cover, and will probably be getting it. taking my chances with some bad reviews , but it is probably the only one that i have found that meets all me needs.
- must be low profile, easy to remove if needed, locking, fold or roll back but not use up a chunk of the bed when rolled back, and good for winter..

I already know the roll up ones are crap in the winter and i really do not like the full hard shells for haulin' stuff.... although i think they look the best.

Sorry man--I don't have the rail system so I put the whole bedrug in there. I didn't have to cut anything to install it.

I also had mixed feeling when I first was deciding on what to get but this unit fits what I wanted in looks and function so I took that chance. Also remember this is the newer Version G2 not the older one were there was alot of complaints of the rubber molding falling off. I was going to say nothing is 100% water tight as stated here but from what it looks like it should do pretty good. Well unless you use a power washer on it then water will probably get under the edges but then again rain and car washing I think you will be fine. I have yet to do a hose test myself yet since I have not washed the truck since I installed it or have we had any rain yet. I will say looking at the edges and seals on there it should do well except maybe were the tailgate meets the truck bed but thats not cause of the cover thats the way the truck has a gap back there but I think most of the water will go pass without going into the bed of the truck. I guess you could get a rubber seal to help that if you wanted it more water tight back there.
