Truck Bed Tonneau CoversDiscussions about Truck Bed Tonneau Covers.
This is a discussion thread titled "Backflip G2 Review after 6 Months (Pics)", within the Truck Bed Tonneau Covers forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I Installed a Backflip G2 in October of last year. When I receive the cover I immediately tried to return it but the company told me they would have to charge me a 15% restocking fee and I would have to pay the $120 to ship it back so I decided to try it out for a few months to see what would happen so here is my 6 month review….
Please note that my other thread about this cover has been deleted. I guess backflip is a sponsor but here goes.
Please remember in the 6 months I have owned this cover I have only opened fully it maybe 8 times.
Installation was fairly easy. If you have bed rails you might as well just throw them out. The solution they have for lowering the rails is a joke. Renders the rails useless. I took them out after a week.
The Look of the cover is great actually. I wish someone would make one of these that lasted more than a few months.
On to the good stuff.
After a few weeks I noticed the seams started coming unglued. The “owner” of the company told me I did not have the G2 because it is not glued and is a “far superior” product. I indeed do have the G2.
This picture shows where the seams started coming apart.
Every seam looks the same:
THis is where the rubber gets gouged trying to flip it back.
This morning was the final straw. I went to get a truck load of mulch so I opened the cover and went on my way. While I was unloading the mulch I noticed that the cover had SPLIT from the aluminum housing that holds the cover and the seams together. I looked in the seam and noticed they were only held in place by a small bead of glue:
In closing....
The G2 leaks like crazy, the rubber falls apart and the seams on every section have come unglued.
I feel like I have been robbed right before my eyes. And then lied to about it.
If anyone wants it I will keep it in the garage for another week. If you are in the charlotte area you can come pick it up. I will find something better.
I've had mine for about a month and opened it fully 2 or 3 times. I too am starting to get the gouging you show in your third picture, although I haven't experienced any of the other issues you have. I sure hope I'm not in the same boat as you in 6 months, but I am beginning to worry.
I'm going to go take a real close look at all my seams and I'm certainly going to be very careful when I open it fully. I think I'll get some small pieces of thick vinyl or leather to insert between the panels and the rubber edge strip when the top is open. It'll be a PITA to put them in and take them out every time I use it, but maybe it will keep me from having to replace it for a while.
I have the same cover over 5 months now,and the main problem is the water leak's.I have to check the seams in the rubber.I use all the time like 3 times a week i have to folded no prblem's in that aspect. The same here i contact the company and they told me go inside and look, from where is leaking/lol.I did and see from where is the leak, then i use some black silicone in the top front corners. And no results, cut the drain hose a little bit= no result's call them again=no rusult's.I think all the covers leak's?=No,but i think i lost my money too.Now if somebody know a good low profile cover let me know.Im use a bed rail's and need a low profile cover.

Interesting pics for sure, I too have a G2 and so have been pretty happy with the setup for my uses. I have opened/folded mine many of times and even left propped open when hauling larger items with no problems to date.
I had mine installed pretty much over 6 months now, I do notice a little rubbing where it fold in one spot but I find that putting on some type of protectant on the rubber seams to help that alot, which also good for keeping UV rays from causing more damage in the future.
Have to contacted Backflip, about the issue and provided them picture of your problem ?? If not I really do suggest you call them and start a converstion on what they can to do fix your issue at this time, from what I see they should be sending you a new panel replacement. Please keep us all updated of any resolution to your problem or any other comments from the company.
I have heard in other threads that they have sent out completely new units to some members here after hearing about problems and getting pictures. From what I recall reading it seems like you get better response calling them on the phone instead of emailing them.
I have a small leak in one spot up by the front corner during heavy driving rains but for the most part the bed stays real dry which has worked great for me.
Wonder if the leak issue varies depending on the length of the bed since there will be one more panel for you Dbl cab owners. I have a Crewmax so I have one less panel to my setup which maybe why mines fitting better than you other guys that have had leaking problems and with one more panel they have it cut a little shorter so less coverage up front where it maybe leaking from, just a idea.
I will say after seeing your picture I will keep a eye on mine a little better now to be sure if it starts to fall apart I am going to be making a phone call real quick to the company to see if they have a resolution to it.
Sorry to hear of your problems and good luck with a resolution soon.
Thanks for the pictures. I can cross one cover off of the list.

I thought about contacting them but to be honest I really don't want them to try and fix it. Then it will just fall apart again in a few months. I just need to find a better solution.
Why not try a Fold-A-Cover G4 Elite ? ... they are low profile with one difference they do sit on top of the bed rails so no worries about using the Toyota tie down rail system, it doesnt interfere with them ... the panels are made from aluminum and then sprayed with a heavy hard rubbery finish so it doesnt get looking bad and uses all stainless harware, its about $200 more than a bak-flip but hey, its metal and I havent heard one person ever say they werent good.

I like the G4 with the tool box. I called a guy at realtruck and asked his opinion and he said the G4 wasn't really any better than the BAK.
I need to get something soon because I carry a lot of stuff in the truck and want to keep it locked up.
So I get a call this morning from Julian, the President of BAK. He said he saw the post here and told me that the cover the I have is a BAKFlip "1.5" and should have never been sent to me.
He said he takes full responsibility for the mix up and is sending me a new BAKFlip G2 and promises I will notice a difference.
Hopefully it will all work out. I will post when the cover arrives next week.
I wish more companies had pride in their products and worked towards the consumer's best interest. Even if I don't like the new cover I have to say I like their business sense.
I have had my foldacover for about 2 months now and love it. It seems like very good quality and I have not had any issues with it. If anyone is considering the foldacover, do not hesitate. I got mine from Realtruck.
Did your original post really get deleted? Are you sure it just was not moved? Thats not right if it got deleted...........
