I've narrowed down my choices to the following and would like the input of those of you with experience with these bed covers. I'm especially interested in those of you who have had the cover for 3+ years so I can ask about how they have held up over time. I have ruled out (personal preferences) the Pace Edwards, Retrax, soft or other tonneaus).
My primary concern is security, my secondary concern is water-tightness, my tertiary concern is quality over time (of gaskets, components, moving parts, color-fastness, uv degradation, etc.).
These are the finalists:
Roll N Lock (approx $1300)
Undercover (approx $750)
Truck Covers (USA) (approx $1500)
Bak Flip (approx $750)
I was given a report from a Dealer in Ft Worth, TX that Roll N Lock will NOT even support their Dealers. They shipped a flawed cover to the Dealer and when the Dealer tried to address the flaw Roll N Lock stubbornly claimed that they are perfect and do not make errors and would not accept the cover back from the Dealer.
The Dealer said UnderCover is great to work with.
I just had Truck Covers USA installed on my truck and it is a HOSS so far.
Yea, I'm sort of mad at RollNLock right now and I removed their cover from my showroom. We sold quite a few of them but let's just say they are....on hold at my shop. That info aside, you should know that RollNLock is vinyl laminated aluminum. The vinyl could tear if abused. The most important thing about a RollNLock is keeping the rails level which may require occasional adjustment. The RollNLock locks your tailgate closed due to tailgate hardware that other covers don't have.
Undercover: It's not a roll up cover, so if your OK with that, it's hard to find a better deal than an Undercover. Very strong (multiple people can stand on it) and durable, has a 3 LED bedlight (but it's not very bright), excellent company support, made in the USA. Undercover's main competitor is Advance Cover which is imported from China. Undercover is easily removeable and lightweight.
Bakflip: By choice, I do not offer BAK products and I have no further comment.
TruckCovers USA: Expensive, but I have to say that the cover is tough and very nice looking! It's powdercoated aluminum (like the Pace Edwards Full Metal Jacket). But, the cover is double walled aluminum, the PE is not. TCUSA can hold 500 pounds while most other covers are rated at around 200 pounds. The TCUSA warranty is two years and the PE Full Metal is three years. I personally discussed this issue with TCUSA. TCUSA has been considering increasing their warranty to three years. I'm going to admit that we had some installation problems with GraetWhyte's cover, but I believe it's our fault and has nothing to do with the cover. We recently became an authorized dealer but we are still learning the ropes. I will say that the installation of this cover does take longer than most roll up covers no matter the level of experience.
I heard the same thing about RollNlock being very difficult in the customer service dept (this is the Florida based company, right?) always trying to dodge blame and place fault instead of just working to get the situation resolved.
I really like TruckCovers, but I'm thinking for half the price (roughly) the Undercover might be the way to go.
check out PE Full Metal Jack Rabbit. it's very strong and secure, it doesn't have vinyl over the lats. they are powdercoated. price is between roll&lock and truckcovers. IMO FMJR is the best looking cover
The Pace Edwards FMJ and TruckCovers USA both look great and are made of the same material (black powdercoated aluminum. Price wise, they are nearly the same now. There's probably less than $50 difference.
Some differences include: The PE slats are perfectly flat while the TCUSA slats have a slight curve. TCUSA is double walled aluminum, PE is not. TCUSA has a smaller roll up canister (at only 8" by 8"). TCUSA has four drain tubes, PE has two. TCUSA can hold 500 pounds, PE (I think) is 200 pounds.
The installation glitch is minor and should only need adjusting to correct...... I have every confidence in 123GONE.... even having them upgrade my LineX to LineX Xtra via ReNew.
There is a major unseen difference in TCUSA ARC vs PE FMJ. The PE FMJ curtain slats are connected by a rubber inserts and could be breached by a blade. The TCUSA ARC curtain is metal to metal interlocking slats. This is why the TCUSA ARC is so much stronger. You get what you pay for!!!
