looking into getting a fiberglasss tonneau cover.did some research on them, but what do you think are the differences in the brands? they cost frm 825 to 1385 for some high class brand? yeh right. they all mount about the same.thanks.
I guess it depends on what options you want. I did a little research on them also when I was looking at caps, I think all the big name ones are about the same.

I've been surfing for a tonneau cover too and it also depends on what look you want, like the flat top or the kind with a ridge. The very expensive Toyota top looks like it might be dye'd, but the others (Leer, ARE, and Jason) are painted with "lifetime warranties" on color.

I just had a LEER 550 installed on Friday. So far so good. The installer did not adjust the latches enough so there was a gap between the cover and the bed rails at the back of the bed. I adjusted them down so it's pretty much air and water tight. The cover is pretty heavy and takes a good pull to get it to close. A smaller woman could have a problem getting it closed.
I ordered it painted to match the truck and it showed up in 4.5 weeks. The paint matches perfect, and I opted for the black carpeted underlining. Total was $1195 installed. That is a HIGH price, but everything is expensive up here due to ridiculous shipping charges.

The LEER 700 looks really nice nad would be a nice add with its remote controller. The LEER 800 seems like it would be prone to scratches on the top since the keyhole is on the top's flat surface. I think ARE and Jason have very similar designs to the LEER.

The LEER 800 and 550 are the exact same with the exception of optional keyless entry and a cargo ligtht. I got the 550 because I didn't want the increased probability of scratching it like you mentioned it. And, I don't require a cargo light, or keyless entry. I'll probably run a set of cargo lights back there one of these days and run the relay off the switch in the cabin. Besides all of that the 550 was $500 cheaper than the 800.
I didn't like the lines that the 700 added to the truck. Just my $.02

The LEER 550 is NOT $500 cheaper than the LEER 800. I believe it is $100 if that. If you paid $1195 for a 550 installed, you paid over $200 more than I did for my 800 which was from a LINE-X dealer. And if they were going to charge you $1695(adding the $500 more you were quoted for the 800), then you would have really been took! But I guess that is the high price for living in Alaska. My LEER 800 w/ the optional light was $979 painted and installed. The light ended up being free, as LEER has a coupon on their website for $40 off. And they still do as of this posting.
And unless I am missing something, the lock is on the top of the LEER 550 and the LEER 800 as I have. Now the LEER 700 is where the lock is on the back of the cover.
I am adding the optioinal keyless entry to mine(as I did not get it for whatever reason when I ordered mine), and it will be hooked to my aftermarket alarm even.

I think he was explaining that in Alaska, shipping costs adds a lot to the price. I like the 700 for the reasons you mentioned about key access, the looks, and the remote unlock feature.

^^Okay I see that now. My bad! But $500 more. WOW! But so in every other case though, it would not be that high priced. The 800 and 550 look way better than the 700 IMO. Pic of mine is below.
Leer 800
With Bed Rug Installed
With High Power V-LED Bulb(pic is a little blurry) Was 11pm at night when I snapped it.

Correct on the shipping. It's absurd up here. Stuff that size comes by barge or truck. Takes a long time and is very expensive. Also, take into consideration that there are very few dealers for vehicles and accessories up here. I only have one Toyota dealer within 350 miles, and only two in the state! It's a nice place to live, but it does have it's drawbacks.
