Default Hard cover for bed / soft cover / rhino bed liner... Opinions?

just bought an 05 double cab last week... i've heard a few things..

1.) get a rhino spray liner right away (500 bucks)
2.) get a hard toneau cover
3.) get both hard / spray in liner
4.) soft cover

can i remove the hard toneau cover when i have extra larger / tall items to put in the bed?

and is itworth getting the spray liner and the hard cover

what are prices for soft cover and the taneau cover.

thanks guys

First off, congratulations on your purchase.

1. I would go with Line-X vs. Rhino. I have had both and prefer the look and texture of the Line-X (Rhino tends to fade over time, but with a cover it may not).

2. Hard cover of choice for me is Undercover. It is very light weight and affordable (58 pounds at a cost of $600) and I can remove it within 10 minutes if I need to haul larger items.

3. I have both, I like the look of the hard cover (and improved MPG) but I also like the fact that I can throw things around in the bed without worrying about doing any major damage to the bed.

4. Personally don’t like the look or security (or lack there of) of the soft covers. I can lock both my tailgate and Undercover if I have to leave something in the bed over night or for any period of time.

Hope this helps your decision making process.

Have fun with your Tundra

I think you first need to decide what you are going to be using your truck for. If your a city boy and the truck is just transportation (i.e. not going to use the bed) then leave it open. Why spend money on something your not using.

If your going to be using the bed to minor hauls from time to time but not worried about people taking things, then buy a bed mat. If security is a concern, then get a hard cover or a retractable. Be sure they are lockable.

Now if you know you'll be hauling stuff from time to time, that you don't want to scratch or scratch the bed of the truck, look into Rhino Lining. It grips better than Line-X.

If you are serious about hauling really heavy stuff all the time, then look into Line-X.

personally i'd get the bed liner first then the hard cover. i wish thats what i would have done but i'm just a broke college kid lol. i went for the cover first so i could go snowboarding without worrying if my board would get stolen due to an uncovered bed. i need a liner and will be getting one asap due to the condition of my bed and rust factors

I have a Retrax and Bed Rug. Works great as a trunk for stuff I want to protect from the elements and I can use it to haul all kinds of homeowner related stuff.

i have a bedliner and the undercover tonneau. the undercover is great, locks, looksgood, better mpg, comes with hooks so you can hang in garage if you need to take it off, good with weather no water leaks.

I had a Line x in my last truck and liked it but my Tundra I put the BedRug in and I love it.I also have a hard tonneau cover by Jason Tops .I haul tools in my bed that will not fit in a tool box so it works out great.Plus the bedrug looks very nice and is great on the knees. When I haul large items I have a small trailer for them.

I suggest a Gaylords X-2000 hard tonneau and Rhino lining!

I have a new double cab also. Here is what I went with and the logic I used.

I also went with an Undercover hard top tonneau cover like the previous poster. It comes off very easy and is light (60 lbs) so one person can handle it, also locks well and makes me feel secure. Only problem is that I believe it only comes in black. The same cover is also sold under the Versacover name.

I went with a hard toyota bedliner. I think it gives you the best bed protection if you are throwing heavy objects (bricks) into the truck, cheapest also. Plus things slide out of the bed for unloading easily (lumber).

Finally to stop things from sliding around when I don't want them to (groceries) I bought a rubber bed mat.

Just my .02.

Rhino is a 100% polyurethane, LINE-X is a blend of polyurethane and polyurea. Both polyurethane and polyurea give the bedliner desirable properties. For example, polyurethane has 2 to 3 times the abrasion resistance of polyurea and provides superior adhesion. Polyurea, gives the liner a higher temperature tolerance and tear strength. For example, the tear strength of Rhino is 145 pli, LINE-X is 304 pli. It's my opinion that the best liners contain a mix of both polyurethane and polyurea.

LINE-X offers a written nationwide lifetime warranty. Rhino’s warranty is only with the dealer that sprayed it.

There are other significant differences between LINE-X and Rhino, let me know if you interested in learning more.

Rhino lining may be softer, but it grips better and is less likely to scratch the items I have in the bed of the truck. So it comes down to what you want scratched first your bed liner or the stuff your carrying. Usually most of the stuff I haul in the back of a pickup truck I usually don't care if it gets scratched, but when I haul furniture, appliances, and scuba tanks, I'd rather have a liner that grips better and less likely to scatch.

Oh, and Rhino lining does have a nation wide warranty.

It's just a trade off, softer is weaker; harder is stronger. Buy whatever suites your purpose.

Sorry, Rhino currently does NOT have a written nationwide lifetime warranty. They tried by assessing dealers money for a warranty pot. The dealers rejected this, so back to the usual warranty by dealer only. Call Rhino corporate yourself, I did. Notice that Rhino's website is TOTALLY silent regarding a warranty. If they had a warranty like LINE-X, you would think they would want to advertise it.

I called 4 different Dealers saying I had a problem with my lining, all 4 said they would honor the warranty and to bring the truck in. 3 of the 4 said that the warranty was nationwide. (I forgot to ask the last guy).

The warranty is not nationwide. The dealers are nice on the phone. Show up at their shop with a major problem and ask if they will fix it for free and the story will likely change. Most likely they would tell you to take it back to the dealer that sprayed it.

You should realize that I'm in this business and I hear all sorts of stories. I average about one problematic Rhino'd truck at MY shop per month. We do not repair Rhino. Occasionally, these Rhino customers will request that we strip it out and install LINE-X.

Here's one that we did strip out, we snapped a few pics first. (The liner is partially wet.)
