Default Retrax Bed Cover

Does anyone know about the Retrax bed cover? I was wondering what you think of it. Do you like it? pros, cons. I am thinking of getting one they look real nice. Just wanted some extra info. Any information would help.
Thanks,
Terry

Not very long ago I organized a group purchase on the Retrax roll top bed cover. I got one and so did several other TS members. Do a search for Retrax and you should find plenty of info. I love mine. Top quality design and materials. Very easy install. I think it's the best of its kind out there. I know RichR got one. See if you can find out what he thinks.
I am working with Performance SS to try to get the GP prices to be every day prices through him for TS members. If I can get this done, I will be sure to let everyone know.

I have a "roll-n-lock" bed cover. Much like the Retrax. Both are very good in my opinion. The guy I bought it from had both types. I liked how both looked and worked. I just liked the locking mechanism more on the roll-n-lock system. Just my $.02.

Default I have a Retrax

polt,
I have had mine on about 3 months.I haven't had water leakage inside. But water does go into the canister and out the drain tubes if you opened it with water on it.So I would say get the drain tubes(no cost).I do get moisture at the front floor bed wall, but that is the small gap even after a line-x.I haven't had any snow yet,so can't say anything about that.
I would HIGHLY recommend you get the lock cover to keep out moisture,i.e. snow, ice rain and dirt. Also I have the stake pocket cut outs(no cost) so if you need to add tie downs you can later.
Right before I got the Retax I saw a cross section of a Roll n lock. The aluminum panels are individually hinged with the top laminte the only thing holding it together.I didn't like
that or the pull cord. The Retrax is one piece and lexan is pretty tough stuff.I haul alot with my truck.I have not seen the lock parts and I hope yxalbr can point out the differences I am curious. You can lock it at anywhere you need to.
The install was easy you just need help lifting the can and rails onto the truck.
The canister is about 13"x13" and you get a little over 6" from floor to can.
IF you have any questions ask me or call the people that makem.I called the poor guy five times asking questions. And they we great on helping on the install too.
http://www.rolltopcover.com
will give their info.
Good Luck on whatever you get. They also have installers around the country.

RichR,

How is the Lexan finish holding up? That was the only thing I disliked about the Retrax setup was the "mirror like finish" they put on it. I know Lexan is very tough stuff, but it seems like it'd get scratched and hazed up pretty quick.

I couldn't afford to get in on the group buy, but a tonneau cover is on my list for future purchase, and the Retrax looks like a nice setup.

Oh, and did you get their "Gate Gasket" ? It sounds like just another piece of weatherstripping, but I wasn't sure.

Default I'll get back to ya!

I haven't washed my truck since it was installed. So there is dirt, but I am mindfull of scratching it.You can't drag heavy stuff across it.The Retrax guys told me that. But I would think its the same for the padded laminate on the others..I did put on the gate gasket also.Trying to get the right spot with the line-x along the bottom didn't come out too well .
I might get to washing this week.So
I can see if its scratched up.The mirror part doesn't bother me.

Thanks for the response...so is the gate gasket just another piece of weather stripping or what? They don't have a picture, nor a good description of what it is, and I'm having a hard time figuring out what it is.

I don't mind the finish on the cover, I'd just be worried that it would get scratched up very easily and that would look crappy.

It's like weather stripping with a bead on one edge. It works very well. With the cover fully extended, you can feel how close to completely air tight it is when you close the tail gate.

Ok...I think I understand. I've got a rhino-liner on, so I might have the same problems that RichR is having with it, but then again, I'd probably have that problem no matter what cover I went with...

Another item to add to the shopping list...

I called retrax to order a cover. He took my order, but told me they will not have a cover for a 2003 stepside Tundra for up to 6 weeks. I am still waiting to hear from them.

Also, you have to check the clamps.I have since it went on.Today I had son and other kids unloading cases of bottled water. They moved the rails when sliding the cases on the rails.I wasn't out there but I noticed when I went to close the tailgate.I checked all the clamps they were a little loose.(My Disclaimer)
I have no other roll top type cover experience.

polt,

If you can wait a little while, I might be able to save you a good chunk of change. See my first reply.

If you order through Retrax you are probably looking at ~$889 + shipping which is usually ~$45 (total ~$934). The price through PerformanceSS should be ~$800-$825 shipping included. So you can figure on saving a good hundred bucks or so.
Give me and PerformanceSS a little time to get it worked out.

Rod
