No regrets here either!
Hey Tchapin, just wondering, how did you get the exact build date of your truck. I would like to know when mine was built but all I know is 03/07 Indiana from the door label. Is it part of the VIN number?
There has been some word that it a replacement 5.7L engine costs 20K USD retail. News now comes that it costs Toyota 5K to replace a single 5.7L unit. It's not known if that is purely the cost to make a single 5.7L unit, or if it includes all the labor and service charges associated with installing a new engine. My guess is that the pure cost to cast and make the 5.7L unit is less than 5K.
Well so I'm new to this web site and in running through the 100's of posts regarding this issue I have missed certian facts as well as have seen them twisted around.
Reading the press release it never says anything about the actual numbers of vehicles affected just says early production, and that there are reported to have been 20 known failures, and somewhere reports that as a very low percentage in warranty numbers, which is true. I take that as a weak statement by such a large manufacturer.
As have been in the manufacturing world, and know how parts are tracked through the supply lines and such. Whether or not they can tell you when the problem started with a part supplied by a vendor, in this case we'll assume the beginning, they would know when it ended. If they identified an issue, and the supplied parts are now "known good" pieces, they certainly know when the issue was corrected and would have a list of VIN numbers prior to that date.
In todays world of computers and bar coding, they know what parts went into what engine as well as where that engine assembly went.
In a case like this where it was a launch of a new product, waiting to find out what vehicles are affected, that by means of waiting for them to fail, is ridculous.
You would think in a case such as this, stepping up to the plate and being proactive rather than reactive would be more advantagious. Warranty is a wonderful thing to boast that they would replace the motor as an assembly and take care of everything. What does that mean? They have to. What never gets covered in a warranty situation is the time you're stuck on the road and hopefully it's not in the middle of the night, and you need to get your trailer towed also, and your wife's sitting there with her words of wisdom regarding this "new truck" which I, personally walked into the dealer and wrote a check for.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. I have an early production truck.
I'm new to this forum and this is my first post..
I Have a 07 5.7 DC TRD in Grey Slate Met. and I love it !!!!! I bought it in March 07 . The Build Date is 02/07 in Indiana Also !! I've got 10,500 miles on it so far no problems but I am a little concerned.....
I am not concerned at all. The worst thing that could happen with a engine failure is to get stranded some ware or to have it cause some kind of injury when it happened. (like a crash). I am very happy with mine and the truck so far can do no wrong. There is one thing for sure. It looks like Toyota is taking very good care of them people with the problems. That is more than I can say for the big 3 that I have had to deal with in the past.
I found out mines ok I went to my dealer and had my customer rep check the vin. ,mines not one of the ones. Now i can go out race me a few more Rams and not worry about it!!
Isn't it funny how the entire issue died so quickly. Not one more report of an actual failure on this site, and no more media coverage.Could it be that the number of cases was too small to really be an issue?
i email toyota recently consairning the recall issue cause i am not from the state i am from the united arab emirates and the waranty wont cover our area so i wantede to know which production date is the defect is in to know wich cars to buy for me and frineds up here the replied the following

We appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns.
Re: 2007 Tundra 5.7 Liter Engine Camshaft
To date we have received approximately 20 warranty cases. This is out of approximately 30,000 5.7 liter engines sold thus far, plus those in dealer stock. However, the problem was discovered and corrected very early and we are confident in the action that was taken. Therefore the number of camshafts in question is very low, and would not affect all vehicles sold. Our continuing investigation is aimed at isolating these if at all possible.
We do not plan to do a service campaign at this time. However; our analysis is still under way and we will make a final determination when it is concluded.
Please note: there have been no reported cases of accidents related to this condition.
If you are experiencing any product concerns, we recommend you contact your local Toyota dealer for diagnosis repair.
