for all who are looking for the perfect truck, the tundra is not it, no truck will ever be it, but i'll bet money that this tundra is the best thing out there. if this powertrane were built in japan this minor quality control problem would not exist. these companies that supply parts to toyota will get it together. this article does nothing to dampen loyality to this truck.

The information appears to be coming from Automotive News. A reasonably responsible automobile site. I guess if it fails it fails. I just hope not on my way to MT next month.

Mike Levine for PUTC has had it out for the new Tundra since day one. I would not put too much faith in 20/30,000 problems for the new Tundra
Could not agree more. Just compare the original article and the one Mark posted. Notice how he takes it out of context and puts a spin on it to make it seem like all 30,000 engines have the issue and that Toyota will replace them all.
As a whole that site (pickuptruck.com) is behind in the times and has been for a very long time. They are doing anything to at this point to get people to visit the site even if it means fabricating there own facts and figures.

My truck at 3000 miles had this camshaft failure. I was told that only 40-50 other 5.7 motors will experience this problem.
Mine was manufactured on 02/07 in Indiana. I beleive the others would have been built around the same time frame.
Oh, toyota give me 70/100k platinum warranty w/ zero deductible on my truck as well as replace the entire motor.
And they are paying one month's payment for me also.
Looks like Pickuptruck.com updated their article with more information on the camshaft issues. My Tundra was also built in Indiana but on 3/07 and I just recently had my 6-spd transmission replaced. Toyota's quality control isn't what it used to be that's for sure.
On another note, Dodge just recently issued a Rapid Response Transmittal (It is RRT#07-014 for you Dodge guys with dealerconnect access) to some of their dealers regarding poorly made crankshafts in the 6.7-liter Cummins. It only effects a small number of trucks but the RRT basically states the engine to be replaced and the truck to be sold at an auction as a "used" vehicle since the VIN #s no longer match between the engine and truck. Dodge is doing the right thing by trying to catch the problem before it gets into the hands of a customer.

The parts that make up the 2007 Tundra 5.7 V8 engine and 6-speed transmission are made in America by American suppliers which explains the quality control glitches that occur from time to time. Corporate Toyota can't force us Americans to be change our cultural ways and become obsessive about maintaining consistent quality control the way their workers in Japan are.
One thing Toyota can and does do is design their engines and transmissions to be exceptionally inherently reliable and durable to begin with so that the vast majority of owners will have a satisfying ownership experience in the long run.
By contrast Ford - Chevy - Dodge don't design their engines and transmissions to be highly reliable and durable in the long run so even if they do catch assembly related glitches before the truck gets into the hands of a customer, in the long run their customera are going to be less satisfied because of engine and tranny failures several years later in the trucks' life.
The severity of the dissatisfaction depends on the customers expectations. Some domestic truck buyers think 150-200K miles of engine and transmission life is excellent, but as they begin hearing 300-500K durability testimonials from Tundra owners 5-10 years from now they will become envious.

Just checked mine and it has the same date 02/07. I'm assuming that means the truck could have been assembled anytime in Feb.??? Motor could have been assembled on a different date prior to that???
How many other forum members have the same production date out of Indiana? Interested to see how many of us there are out there. Any problems?
Yep, looks like they changed the tune of that article at pickuptruck.com.
This reminds me a bit of the sludge debate a couple of years ago. There was all this bad press about the 3.0L engine (which I never had a problem with in my Highlander). Yet apparently there were 3,000 engines out of 3.3 MILLION that were affected by sludge. This is a very small fraction of engines (0.1%)!
So far, 30 engines out of 30,000 is also 0.1%. Just goes to show you how the internet can really hype a topic.
Anyway, it looks like Toyota will come to the plate for anyone who runs into this unfortunate problem.
I too would like to know how to find the actual date of production. Mine was built in Indiana in 03/07.
Mine has the exact same date of 02/07 and was built in Indiana.
So far (knock on wood) zero problems and a super smooth engine with no piston slap.

Has me a little concerned now.

if my truck is affected by this .. (and it probally is because it was built at the same plant in the same time period) i really wont be happy about having a dealer tech opening my valve cover and i probally wont even take it in to get the recall done ... i have had enough bad luck with dealers service and i really dont trust them ... my only mehanic from now on will be myself ...
