Please look to the upper right of the blue colored nut in the attached photo. It looks to me like a piece of the metal base is broken on the truck on to where the O-ring on the plastic oil filter cap contacts the truck. When I try to very carefully torque down the cap the O-ring gets hung up on the notch and deforms. When I fill the truck up with oil and start it, oil leaks from this spot. I've drained the oil twice and used fresh oil filters / O-rings with the same result.
Before I call to have it towed 30 miles to the dealer, I want to make sure this isn't right. Is this piece broken? I am simply confused and doing something wrong?

That is not broken, but appears to be a machined relief. I would assume that the beveled surface is to guide the canister into place, but if the o-ring seal fails to seat, this would be your first point for oil to seep out. I have had similiar leaks from o-rings not sealing and have always had luck by using a good dosing of vaseline, an old piper taught me that trick many years ago.
I would also check the threads and seat area for possible metal shavings, thus preventing a true seal. Use plenty of light, aluminum shavings are very hard to see sometimes.
Another possible trick is to blacken the surface with a marks-a-lot and then lightly seat the canister, then remove and look for low spots that would still be black.

I can't tell for sure, but isn't that where the retaining clip is supposed to be? There is a small clip that acts as a safety when you unscrew the filter cap. You have to carefully hold it away from the cap while unscrewing. Does yours still have the clip?? It looks to me like you might have broken it off and the cap is not being tightened all the way. I'd go look at mine, but I really don't want to hassle with the engine cover again until the next oil change........
Here is what the Toyota instructions say:
(e) Using SST, remove the oil filter cap.
SST 09228-06501
NOTICE: Do not remove the oil filter bracket clip.

Chris, I'd also recommend filming your oil filter bowl O-ring with vaseline as Woody mentioned.
On airline jets it is not a "trick" but standard procedure to lube O-rings that go on the oil system drain plugs and filter bowls with petrolatum (purified vaseline) to prevent twisting, bunching, rolling, cuts, etc, during installation.
Don't gob on too much. Just a good film should be enough to keep it from bunching up. Perhaps also smear a slight film on the engine block where the filter bowl's O-ring mates up, below the bowl threads.
Nonetheless, I was studying the picture you attached and think it looks strange that there's a section of casting that is raised on the perimeter of where the filter bowl O-ring chamfer is. Maybe one of the other guys on this forum can see if they have the same thing when they do their next oil change.

FYI - the instructions with the factory oil filter kit explain to lube the new o-rings with a light coat of engine oil before seating them. I forgot to do this on my first oil change but I didn't have any problems, no leaks and running good with 0w20 in it now at 4800 miles. Would vaseline provide some special benefit? Seems it would be easier to just dip them in the new oil...

its just petroleum jelly. thicker than oil. oil works fine

Thanks for the followup. It turns out I was seriously confused. The large O-ring does not go on the large lip on the plastic oil filter cap. It goes about 2" about this lip in a groove just below the threads. When I removed the cap and O-ring initially, I didn't pay attention to where the O-ring went and installed it in the wrong place. Aaaargh!
The O-ring does not seat on the smooth surface just to the upper right of bluish nut/bolt. It seat up inside the cave where the plastic filter cap goes. The location of the O-ring was not clear to me if you look at the directions on the oil filter box or the "3UR-FE LUBRICATION – OIL AND OIL FILTER" pdf on changing the oil within the Where is oil filter located 5.7 liter tundra thread.
I figured all this out just as the tow truck was leaving to pick up my truck. I was able to call them and get the tow cancelled without being charged.
Live and learn. I'm going to put a link to this thread in a couple of the main oil filter threads so that hopefully no one else makes this mistake.

Nice to hear you figured it out. I don't see how the 10 minute oil change joints are going to deal with the 5.7 engine. I would bet there will be more than one that will charge for a new filter and then never change it cause it's such a time consuming job. That's why I will do my own from now on. Sorry your first time was such a hassle!

Thanks for the update Chris. Don't feel like your rowing the boat by yourself. The water filter on my travel trailer is a similar set up as far as the o rings. When the service tech at th RV dealer reconnected the filter prior to my taking delivery, he did the same thing w/ the o ring. I didn't know until the bedroom carpet went squish squish. The oil changes will be a breeze from now on.
