Default Maintenance light re-set limitations

It would appear that the maintenance light comes on at 5,000 mile intervals. I changed my oil early, well before this light came on but there appears to be no way to re-set it back to zero. According to the manual, it can be re-set when the light comes on. If the light is not on, as with an early oil change, the re-set sequence doesn't seem to work.

Has anyone else tried this?

Default reset the Maint Req light

Okay, I must have having another moment here, trying to reset the Maint Req light on the dash. Manual says to have the ODO showing, turn key to ACC or OFF, then back to ON while holding the trip reset for at least 5 seconds. If is doesn't work try again. I tried if 20 f'ing times and it still doesn't work. Anyone gotten this to work? Am I reading something wrong?

The manual is terrible for this if you don't have the multi-function display (i.e. SR-5 or lower trim level). I called the Toyota 800 number and they were confused and kept referring to non-existant owner's manual pages. Here is the trick: You have to have the odometer set to "Trip A" before starting the process. So put it on "Trip A". Turn off the key. Hold the reset button and turn the key back on and wait.

1. Turn the ignition switch to the “IG-ON” position and make sure that the odometer is set to “TRIP A”.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the “ACC” or “LOCK” position.
3. While pushing the “TRIP” meter reset knob, turn the ignition switch to the “IG-ON” position.
4. With the ignition switch in the “IG-ON” position, keep holding the “TRIP” meter reset
knob (for at least 5 seconds) with the LCD counting down as shown in the illustration.
When the reset is complete, the display will show “000000” for 1 second. Then the maintenance light will turn OFF.
5. Release the “TRIP” meter reset knob when the reset is complete.

This is how I do it too and it works for when I reset it because it will come on when its time to change your oil. I have to reset it and the instructions mentioned here are correct.

Great, I'll give it a try, sounds like TripA is the difference. (My manual says to be in ODO mode, not Trip A or Trip B.)

It works, I have been trying for 3 days to follow the owners. manual. The Trip A trick worked like a charm. So much for Toyo proofreading.

The dealer tried to give me the wrong oil filters not once, but twice, and they were quite damn insistent about it as well. Just speak very loud and slowly C-A-R-T-R-I-D-G-E F-I-L-T-E-R.

Default Re-setting the "Maintenance Required" light

At first I had a little confusion, but I think I finally have it figured out. The manual has simple instructions on how to re-set the 'maintenance required' light when it starts coming on. For me, however, I changed my oil in the new truck at about 1,900 miles (I just wanted to get an oil change done with a new filter).

Funny thing was, the maintenance req'd light was not blinking when I changed the oil, so there was no need to re-set it. I even went through the steps outlined in the manual to re-set it but unless it NEEDS to be re-set it will not re-set itself. Sure enough, at the expected mile interval, it came on and started blinking.

By then, of course, I was in the middle of my oil change interval and really didn't need another oil change. So I'm going to allow the light to keep coming on (just for a few seconds after startup) until I change my oil again. Then I can re-set it AT THAT TIME, and then it will be coming on at the right intervals.

Well I did the infamous oil & filter change @ 4784 MI. the maint. light was blinking for approx. 5 seconds at each startup at that time. I followed the directions in the manual for resetting the maint.light, it would not reset! 25 miles latter it is still blinking at start up (what gives)
