Default Rear Axle Noise ??? Maybe??

Need some opinion here. I recently noticed a clunk from the rear end. At first I thought it was the hitch receiver boucing in the hitch. When I took it out the noise was still there, then I thought it was a loose box, or spare tire.

It happens when hitting a speed bump at slow speed un equal. one back tire before the other, I now can hear it on the road hitting bumps on one side and not the other. After talking to a friend he graps the rear tire and shakes the truck back and forth (sideways to the truck) fairly hard. You can hear and feel the clunk in the axle or rear end.

So I went to the dealer and asked them, the mechanic said you shouldn't hear that, I showed him by shaking the tire. He thought the same, spare tire, or exhaust. But nope you can feel it in the tire so to speak. So we went over to a new one on the lot, same thing. Go inside to one on a lift same thing. So I guess it is normal.

My question is here, is this normal or normal for this type of axle? I don't know enough here to ask the right question.

It just seems strange to me to have this clunk, mind you maybe it was always there, I don't remember it and maybe I am sensitised to it now?

I just never read anything about this, and so many people have complained about trival things, why not this?

Thanks all,

PS Still love and would never part with my baby.

I have noticed that mine klunks when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Not sure if it is the tranny or rear end. Other threads on the same issue don't really give a definate answer. I plan on trading mine in before the 60k warranty is up so I don't loose sleep.

Mine only clunks when first driven after it has been parked for a few hours like in the morning when I'm going to work. But as far as when hitting bumps--no. There are 4 speed bumps here where I live and every time I leave I go thru those and same thing when I come back. Sometimes I would drive thru them fast, sometimes slow--1 mph. No clunks at all.

art64 - I think the clunk you are hearing when starting up is normal... I have it to... I think I read that it is the ABS doing a self-check

No its not normal, mine is still in the shop and will be there until 8/07 while they locate a replacement diff.
There IS INDEED a flaw in the 10.5 set-up.
The dealer is being very evasive about "saying anything" at this point.
If I have to buy a case of beer for every Tech in that shop,I will get to the truth eventually

As per another thread:
They "Denied" the Official TSB because there hasn't been another "instance" "like mine"
I called BS because that isn't what they alluded to when my issue was first presented. It takes more then one "instance" for a TSB to be logged.Simply changing "descriptive wording" is sufficient in avoiding a TSB.
TSB's are public and "PUBLIC" isn't what Toyo wants .
Hopefully they'll crack the diff open for inspection before shipping it out, otherwise they'll be successful in what one could call a "cover-up"

If someone from Toyo has a better/different explaination of Toyo's TSB protocal that doesnt match what I just posted please take the time to share it.Im just going by what the Service Mgr. quoted to me

The sound is not from start up doing a self check, this is all the time, anytime, I want to hit a bump uneven. For example, back out my drive way when I hit the end of the driveway where it meets the road, clunk. The easiest way to explain this is the hitch receiver is clunking. That is exactly what it sounds like. Do me a favor go out a grab the back tire and shake the truck as hard as you can. Tell me you don;t have a clunk in the differential. It is loud. You will swear that the spare tire is loose. This did this on 3 trucks on the lot all new and I test 2 more here in another town. They all do it. Someone try it and tell me I am nuts.

I have a soft "bump" when staring from a dead stop too, but no other sound...over bumps, uneven pavement, etc. My "bump" feels like some kind of ABS or traction control check.

I thought I was loosing my mind also but after hearing this I guess I am not, I here it when I back into my driveway don"t here it when going forward, can't explain the sound but it's like a thump instead of a clunk and it does it all the way up the drive. almost sounds like gas sloshing back and forth in the fuel tank but filled it up and still here the same, I will have to try the tire test and see what happens.

I have a clunk when just letting off the brakes...kinda sounds like axle wrap. I'll assume that's what it is until a. something breaks or b. it ends up driving me nuts to no end and I have it looked at. Hope it's not my rear end...I'm blaming the 2 piece driveshaft.

Update;
Come to find out my spider gears locked up and the diff swallowed what it could and spit out the rest .
Diff is in route to Toyo to determine " WHY" ?
I tried to convience the Service writer it was due to excessive bed bounce LMAO !!!
The look on his face was priceless Buwahahahahahaha !
I refered him to this forum and current topics of such and he's like he promised to visit so he could see for himself.

Have at it Trolls . . . . . . . the 10.5's are JUNK !

I have the same catch after breaking to a stop. I do not know what it is but it sounds like all of them do it. I know of a couple friends who also do it. To me it feels like the rear disc breaks are hanging up and releasing when you take off. On mine if you come to a stop and let the breaks off for a second or two it usually does not do it. It is just something to try.

The clunk you are hearing when hitting bumps is probably from the tailgate. Try lifting up on the right hand side of the tailgate at the bottom by the hinge when the tailgate is closed and you will notice their is some slack. If you lift it up and down you will probably here the clunk you are explaining when hitting bumps. I think since the tailgate has a shock absorber mounted behind the left taillight assembly to assist with the tailgate dropping it makes it lighter on the right hand side when the tailgate is closed. That is just my assumption as I have the same clunk when hitting bumps. The noise does not appear with the tailgate down or off.
