Default The key is too big for my Supra key locker

I use one of these key lockers to keep a spare key on the outside of the truck. Am I the only one who is paranoid about locking themselves out? I don't do it very often but it royally sucks when I do. The worst case scenario is that I'm taking a nap in the middle of the night at a highway rest stop while on a road trip. I feel safest when the key is in the ignition just in case I need to get away from something. Also, I might be using the radio or something. Anyway, I wake up and find I have to take a pee so I hop out of the truck and the door closes. DOH!!! 2am in the middle of nowhere.

It's also real interesting to lose your keys down the drain at a water park. You file a report and get your keys about 3 months later when they shut the park down for the winter.

Anyway, this little $40 metal combo safe is screwed in somewhere to the body of your truck. It's super thick. I think you could run over it with your truck and it wouldn't open. The only problem is that the new Tundra key is way too big to get in there. I even tried to put the fob in there and that's too thick, also. What I ended up doing is prying open the fob, pulling the circuit board out, putting that in a little ziploc bag and sticking it in there. At least it will allow me to unlock the truck in a bind. Then, I have the actual key in my Console Vault.

There is also a neat little combo trailer hitch drawer that would work, however, it's about $60. And, you wouldn't be able to use it during some of the times you are most likely to lose your keys - camping and boating.

I just had a plain metal key cut from the dealer that is shorter than the original. I keep my valet key hidden inside and now I have a way in and a way to drive with it only costing a few dollars. The transponder keys are like 80 or so $'s programmed so beware of that expense.

My Toyota dealer sent me a plastic card that has a plastic key in it. I went by the dealers parts dept and they cut my key pattern on that plastic key in that card. Looks like a credit card. It can only open the door. You just pull out this credit card looking thing and push the keey out 90 degrees and open the door. The key then springs back in the center of the card. Very nice option to have.

I have the same exact General Electric Supra lock box that StatCoder has and it could be a life saver. They make other types, along with some wider models that will hold a standard size credit card, and a round tube model that goes in a 1.5? hole drilled behind licence plate and has an optional hinged plate holder like the older cars with gas neck behind tag. The model StatCoder and I have are considered "deep" models, but are not very wide due to the heavy cast material they are made of; one of my keys sits at an angle in the box due to width. It will still hold the key for my flatbed truck, a rubber headed small key to lock the tilt cab mechanism, one key for the 4 tool boxes, and still have enough room to store my extra motorcycle key. Excellent product that I am not affiliated with, but I am impressed with its quality and usefullness.
