Word from a friend of mine that is "In House" at Toyota says they should be available in '08. All of the same cab configurations that are available now but will be available in 3/4 ton and 1 ton chassis. Along with a dually and YES, a 500 horse Catepillar Turbo Diesel!!!!

And there going to have all this by 08? Highly unlikely. 500 hp is unlikely as well.

Who's your friend? The crack dealer behind the local 7 eleven? What in the hell are they going to do, take an engine out of a semi and put it in a tundra? I have serious doubts that they have a 500 hp diesel that will A) fit into a tundra engine bay and B) meet emissions. Then of course you will need a new transmission to handle what would have to be well over 1000 ft/lbs of torque. That would shred the current 6 speed in under a minute. If all this stuff was out there set to be released in a matter of months, I think we would all know about it by now.
IMO, I think we are 4-5 years away from a diesel Tundra, if ever. Nissan has already said to have scrapped their plans. I would have thought we would have seen a diesel FJ or Tacoma by now.
It's not important who my friend is!! What's important is that it is the same friend who gave me the '07 Crew Max specs 17 months ago when I bought my '06 DC Tundra. Also the same friend who told me about the DC Tacoma 1 year before its release. My new Crew Max is exactly what he told me it would be over a year ago. He said 400 hp and I got 381!!! I'll take it. He said close to 500 hp in a factory diesel. Hopefully they will put the 400 hp Hybrid Lexus motor in it. Call it 400 hp, either way, my order has been placed!!!!!!!!!

Do you have any idea what size engine it will take to get 500hp from a factory diesel and still meet emissions? Cummins is getting 350 out of a 6.7 that they have been working on for years. I think it is impossible that an engine that size would fit into a Tundra. As I said, then you have to worry about how all that power will get to the ground and that would take a HUGE, very beefy transmission.
IMO, if Toyota does eventually release a diesel it may have 500 ft/lbs of torque but there's no way in hell it will have 500hp. If you can provide some documentation from CAT about this engine I will give this nonsense a second look. There should be all kinds of info on it if it will be on the road in a few months. There's been info out since 2005 on the new Cummins diesels that will go into the Ram 1500 and suv's next year so I would assume that someone can find some basic info on this CAT engine. I am a diesel fanatic and to this point I have yet to see ANY proof that a diesel tundra is coming or this new miracle engine even exist. Until I do I call BS on you and your friend, sorry.

A relative has an oil field service company. At one point they had a fleet of diesels. I think he said all but one are gone. His trucks are on dirt roads more than pavement. Given his use, the weight of the engines causes all sorts of suspension and steering wear issues. He's gone back to gas because they can't afford the down time and maintenance costs.

I'm callin' BS on this one too... either your friend knows nothing about diesels, or he has left out some pretty important information (i.e. maybe a 350hp diesel coupled with a 150hp electric to produce some kind of diesel hybrid). A 500hp diesel would have close to 1000lbs/ft of torque and as others mentioned, the transmission alone would be an unbelievably large, heavy, complicated, and expensive piece of machinery. Besides, the main strengths for diesel come in the form of additional towing which would lend it to more torque, a supercharged Tundra will do 500hp, so what need is there for a diesel version that does the same?
320 to 400hp for diesel makes more sense. In terms of development times, I think it will be 2010 to 2012 before we see it anyway -- Toyota said they would introduce their first diesels as 2010 models...
