All the Japanese mfg's, along with other countries that turn out products that have known build quality that is either very high or outstanding, have a couple things in common.
A work ethic along with a very strong sense of social integrity attached to a heritage of discipline.
or
A job market that is overwhelmed with undercutting massive unemployment!
Americans can get the job done, however, currently I would say we are to litigious and prone to self entitlement which is directly attached to our belief system being infused with rap music lol .... I had to make a funny! I believe an American could accomplish ANYTHING, however, we must have a leader to do it! At this time our leaders SUCK!!!!!!!
I believe you are mistaken. The only thing that will keep america alive are the smart immigrants coming in from foreign countries. Without their brains we're screwed. I'm a young adult and I see it. Our youth including my generation are pretty pathetic. We have our previous generations to thank for the wealth our nation currently has but a shift is happening and it's not looking good.
Sorry but back on topic. So this clunk some are talking of. I've felt a clunk when it goes into gear from park to drive or into reverse to drive. also sometimes from a stop it feels like the drivetrain is slipping and not completely grabbing initially. Too bad I'm not familiar with automatics. I have no idea what they are supposed to feel like All I've owned was manual transmissions before this truck.
Rockstate, IMO Toyota's are the best out there. I have a 90 SR5 4x4 extra cab with 257,000miles and runs like a top. I still have the original rear brakes, alt, starter, tranny, transfer case & of course Motor. I will never part with it because it looks new ($2,000 paint job 5 yrs ago) and has never failed me.
Gotta love those toys.

Wow..... out of the mouth of babes. I don't think you are as pathetic as you would have us believe!
Just picked my truck up and I honestly can't tell any difference in the way it drives now with the new tranny vs. the old one. Every time I take off from a stop there is an initial clunk that you can feel plain as day which the dealer admitted they still feel but they say its normal. I test drove several 07 4x4 5.7L tundras and felt this on a couple including mine but didn't feel it on one. I'm almost at a loss, maybe it is normal but it sure is annoying. Now i don't even know why they replaced the tranny because it acts the same now as it did before. I did notice on the paper work it said REMAN ATM installed and almost had a cow but service and parts assured me thats how they tagged in the system and toyota uses reman cases but all new internals. I hope that isn't a bunch of BS.
And by the way, their only explanation for replacing the tranny was "due to a failed torque converter".

I think the "clunk" at startup in normal for this truck. I'm surprised they replaced the tranny based on it. This was discussed in the following thread:
I'm safely away from this situation (04 4spd), but some of it sounds like the computer.

Has anyone compiled all the reported failures so we can see numbers, mileage at failure, etc?
I don't think so, but many members on this site probably don't want to see numbers, cause their Tundras are perfect. I say this because of the previous posts. At any rate, I am sure the tranny issues will be ironed out in 2008 models.

Actually it would be very interesting to see the actual #'s, dates of production, location of production and truck configuration. I can only think of like 3 valid tranny failures on this forum that I have read about. Though there have been a few that were replaced that didn't fix the actual problem.
I agree, I think some trannys were replaced when it was something else causing the problem.?? I have counted 5 replaced trannys on this site including mine, and I helped one guy deal with TMCA, which Toyota took good care of him. This is a good site.
