Actually it would be very interesting to see the actual #'s, dates of production, location of production and truck configuration. I can only think of like 3 valid tranny failures on this forum that I have read about. Though there have been a few that were replaced that didn't fix the actual problem.
Yep, I definitely agree on including assembly plant, date, etc.
Hello all. First time here. I bought my 2007 5.7 Tunda about 2 weeks ago. I have almost 1000 miles on it and I have some concern about the trans, especially after reading this forum. I never drove an automatic that down shifted when coasting and actually slowed the vehicle down. Wasnt sure if it was me since most of my past vehicles have been stick shift, or if it was just how the trans worked in the Tundra. It also seems to stay in gear after hard exceleration, and then letting off, similar to how it would feel if you wound out 3rd gear in a stick shift, and then let off the gas. It slows the vehicle.
I appologize if it was covered in this forum, I read about 8 pages but didnt see any mention. Anybody notice the same thing ?

Hey Bump... thats the "AI" system working that you are experiencing. No worries, that is how its supposed to be. But, if you really don't like it, just switch to S mode. AI is turned off in S mode and it will not shift up or down nearly as much.

Number of Tundras with this problem at this dealer: I was told that I was the first and onlty one -- when mine was replaced.
However .. I do believe that some of the problems with the transmission have to do with the ECM(s) and software.
SOS
PS .. Maybe the others with transmission replacements can also give this info to help us sort this thing out ?? ...

I agree with SOS. I don't think a lot of the tranny's needed to be replaced, but maybe only the torque converters or ECM's. Still no official feedback from Toyota?

I have the "rumble strip" tranny problem. The regional tech rep said that the problem is known, that the drivetrain engineering team is working on the problem (in fact, it is their number 1 priority), and that Toyota feels that between 5 and 10% of the trannys out there have the issue. They said it has to do with the way the computer is signaling the torque converter. They are not sure if it the a computer or torque converter problem.
They offered to replace my tranny and torque converter, but I might or might not get one that behaves the exact same way as my current one. Or, I could wait for the real fix....my choice. I am waiting, as they also said if I get tired of the problem, or if it gets worse, I can called the dealer at any time to initiate a replacement.

Just got back from the dealer today. They had a tech go on a ride along with me and of course I couldn't duplicate the problem. Then they ran the codes and found nothing. They documented my complaint and sent me on my way. I guess I'll be calling Corporate tomorrow. I'm not gonna just let my truck eat itself (Or whatever the heck it's doing)for the next however many miles until something serious does happen.
And get this, on my way home from the dealer I'm looking at the side of my truck via the side view mirror and notice a brand new fat ding in the side of my bed! I turn around and go back. They agreed to schedule me an appointment to get it fixed. They better fix it back to new or I'm gonna raise hell. Only have had the truck 2 weeks!! This whole situation is becoming pretty irritating.
IMPILOT,
Any chance you can provide the name and number of the person you spoke too at Toyota? The rumble is driving me crazy. I agree it may very well be the ECM or torque converter. I get the rumble only in 5th gear going into 6. Usually 1250 rpm 32-36mph. I have not had good experience with my local Dealer service in the past and am expecting a hard time getting them to do anything. I actually drove 250 miles to another dealer to buy my new truck to avoid the local dealer. This must be payback ..... ha.
I just bought a new tundra (5.7 obviously) and already had problems. I felt a vibration under the cab when it would downshift at about 50mph. The truck has 400 miles on it and the dealer is replacing the torque converter and tranny. I'm very disappointed. This is my third Tundra and my first "dud." Other than that, the truck is mint.
To answer other posts, I am dealing with Harr Tundra in Worcester, MA. They have been helpful and just decided to replace both parts instead of messing around.

Had my tranny replaced last week problem gone.
Why wait. do the math 5 to 10 % of 200,000 plus vehicles.
Your at the head of the line now wait and you could be waiting a long time later on as other come forward.

Was the 5-10% reference from toyota, or your best estimate? I haven't seen a percentage this high referenced anywhere? Thanks

That was the number given to me by the service manager. He had talked to the regional technical rep. I assume that number came from the regional rep. He did say that many trannys can have this problem, and the owner not even know it. He said some folks probably assume it is road imperfections, etc. I also got the feeling that there are varying degrees of the "rumble strip" issue. I think that is confirmed by varying descriptions on this board.

Thanks for the info. I remember feeling the rumble strip only while towing in 1st and 2nd gear. It was very obvious, but disappeared in the higher gears??
