So now I'm driving a 2007 Camry rental. Nice car.... shame my Honda ATV wouldn't fit in the trunk. I'll bet if I kill a deer bowhunting this weekend it'll fit in the back seat.
Today is a new day.... I appreciate everyones comments since my last posting. I want to be clear that I am a Toyota Fan all the way and I still love my Truck. I am confident toyota will resolve my issue with the tranny. Not liking the idea of ripping the guts out of a brand new truck but Heh... Better at toyota than one of the other competitors.
Also, for those who are hesitant to buy a new Tundra now.... Don't put it off. They are great trucks. Mine is one of only a few I've heard off that was having a problem. There are over 200,000 units on the road today. Certainly you don't see them piling up at the Dealer service bay.
I am so anxiios to get mine back. Bow season is here and I need to haul my ATV.
Toyota started "building them here in the states" about 25 years ago. I'm curious, exactly what are you basing your opinion that quality has really slipped during that time?
I have an older Toyota 4x4 that was built in Japan.
I remember reading something last month that Toyota had slipped behind Ford in customer satisfaction for the first time.
The report was based on problems reported per vehicle.
That makes me wonder. I'm not trying to cause problems or bash Toyota because I love my older truck and I really wanted a new 07 Tundra but I've never heard of any problems with the Toyotas so now I'm a bit leery of getting one.
I'm just worried about these newer trucks and the Tranny, Camshaft, bed bouncing and paint flaking dashes and the very thin paint on the exterior of the vehicle.
I'll probably get an 09 once they come out with a bigger bed on the Crew Max and have a couple years to shake out the bugs.

a friend of mine works at a Toyota Dealer. He says that on most new products, if they have an engine or trans problem it is removed and a new one ordered for it. The complete engine or Trans is shipped back to Toyota for review by the factory techs. So many times they will not know at the dealership, what has caused the problem.
Yea just so you guys dont think i just like bitching lol ill tell yall a lil story. I purchased a 06 Chrysler Pacifica about a year and a half ago or so...From day one the thing would stumble when accelerating from a dead stop. I took it to the dealer bout 6 times or soo and they kept telling me that they either could not duplicate or when i rode with them and showed them that they did not think this was unnormal. So of course 6 times...and u get a Lemon Law...After all the hassle with the court stuff on that i needed a vehicle. Being in the farming industry here in PA i really needed a pickup so i went looking..at the time the Tundra was not yet available or they new one anyways....so i settled for an 06 DC Tacoma TRD offroad...very nice truck not quite the bed size i was hoping for...around the farm but nice nonetheless....didnt have the real urge to absolutely have a Tundra but woulda loved one anyday...So in July i went to the Pocono NASCAR race and on the way home i was stopped and got rearended...by guess what... an 04 Tundra...The other guys insurance insisted it could be fixed and thats what they did. When i got it back it was not right so after taking the rental back right across the street from the Toyota dealer i traded in the newly fixed Tacoma on my new Tundra. When i went down yesterday to let them know the "rumble strip" problem i was having i had no intention of even getting it fixed i only wanted it documented somewhere. The service writer then insisted that i get it fixed. He said he would note it but that he really wanted me to get it in there and replaced...so i concurred and agreed to bring it in next week. This is the reason i now buy Toyotas instead of the big 3...their concern for the consumer more then theirselves is tremendous...Going from Chrysler telling me they cant fix it and taking it all the way to court to now where Toyota is telling me that they would rather fix it then let me ride around to work it out is incredible.
I agree the Toyota service and overall treatment of their customers is great but It would be nicer if they could build the trannys right the first time so these problems wouldn't happen at all.
IMHO I think they might have rushed this new truck to the market.
Does anyone know why these transmissions are breaking down? Has Toyota come forward with what is really happening here?
It seems like there are more than just a few Tundras with this problem.
I spoke to my local dealer and there are very aware of these issues.
After all these posts I'm definitely going to wait for the 09's at the earliest.
I dont see why you would wait i know i certainly would not even if i was in a different situation....everything is prone to having a few failures....you see alot of them on here simply because that is what this forum is for...for me or any other member to post a concern and see if anyone else has a related problem....so your always gonna hear the problems on here and even if you took all the members on here and stacked that # up against the number of the trucks out there you wont even come close.....so like others are saying just take it with a grain of salt. I read about these problems along with the camshaft failures before i purchased....didnt sway my decision at all...i would rather go with the Tundra...get excellent service and customer care then go buy a dreaded Ford or a GM product....Just my two cents!

My engine seized up after I had it in for service with what they called a sending unit problem.
I was complaining about no oil pressure red light. They said to drive it home and we would order the part and call you.
I never made it back to the house. They had to tow it back.
The took two weeks and then told me it was the inertia switch. Yeah right. I know they rebuilt the motor as it never sounded the same and ran different after I got it back.
My transmission started slipping badly at 60,200 miles or 200 miles after the warranty expired.
All the dash guages had a mind of their own and I had to calculate how much fuel I had in the second tank.
I had enough and I drove it down the the Toyota dealer and they gave me 9000.00 towards my 1991 4x4 V6 Extra Cab.
I'll never buy a GM or Ford as long as I live.
The Tundras have me really worried though. Like I said earlier I'm going to wait it out.

Yor're smart to wait. And these ney sayers here that it's a very small problem are wrong. I bet that only 2-3% of tundra owners visit this site, and look how many problems are here. And all your problems were with pre-1991 fords. Just so you know, domestic quality has increased 100 fold in the last ten years, were foreign quality has decreased.

In my case, it was a barely perceptible rumble in very specific circumstances; which by the way has now entirely disappeared after 3000 miles on the ODO. I am not saying this is the case with everyone that is reporting the issue, but I hate to hear this described as "FAILURES". We are not seeing people broken down by the side of the road with trashed trannys. There is a rumble during overdrive shifting, especially when lugging the engine. Probably related to ECU programming of the torque converter lockup.

My 06 Tacoma would do similar things to this "rumble" from time to time but the harder I drove it the better it was. It also went away after few thousand miles. I'm inclined to believe it a Toyota thing. That tranny acted very similar to my Tundra's.
I say to you all, drive these Tundra like you stole it. I think the truck likes it better that way. I use S mode almost all the time and rarely if ever have I had an issue. Damned good truck.
Oh, I also remember reading someone else post up about it doing it in 6th gear between 30mph to 45mph.... Well, sure... you are in a super high gear and border line laboring it. Give it some gas or put it in 4th or 5th. I guarantee the "rumble" will go away.

You are spot on and some folks cant seem to understand that. Call 10 Ford dealerships and ask them how many trannys have failed ( I am not talking about rumble strip crap I am talking FAILED, as in towed in not driveable) this year in 07 F-150's.....I bet more than Tundras have. And you can do the same with Dodge, Chevy and GMC. These Tundra concerns in question are small problems affecting a minute number of folks in comparison to the masses and like you said , some are exhibiting a problem that is probably gonna be fixed with a ECM/PCM flash program. Lets get it right theres failure and then theres the need to adjust something. I just find it so funny how fast folks want to jump on the Toyota FAILED bandwagon when its not the case at all. Like I said yesterday I was at my local Toyota Dealership talking to TOYOTA Techs (friends of mine) and the only things they have been working on is the A/C vent, a couple tailgate linkage clips and for the most part the rest is just maintenance (oil changes and such), the facts are skewed on this forum with those searching for help that are internet saavy. Some polls would be very interesting to show how small the numbers are. When was the last time you heard about a camshaft failure??? Or a Tundra actually being towed in for a tranny problem??? Not many out there fellas, look at the big pic for the hottest selling truck on the road right now.(At least in my town!)
