SOS I have a couple of questions for you about your perceptions on the Transmission because I too drive by feel and am very in tune with my vehicle, but being that this truck is so new I have filed most concerns as being overly observant.
1.) When your transmission felt like it was stuck in 5th was it a feeling of drag or did you notice the rpms being higher? (I noticed this morning on the interstate that I felt like the truck was stuck in 5th, but the rpms were in the 1700 - 1800 range at 70 mph)
2.) Do you notice your transmission more when your going downhill or coming to a stop sign? (I've noticed that rather than a smooth coasting sensation of old you can actually feel this transmission slowing the vehicle down. Either that or the 7000lb chunk of metal is not "gliding" very well. My other car is a Ford Expedition so I'm used to driving big heavy vehicles most of the time.

If they were a big 3 union autoworker they'd get paid $30 an hour to start with pay raises every 6 months whether they could figure out how to put a wheel on or not. And if a big 3 autoworker at a foreign plant then $2 an hour and every 4 Sunday off.

I don't have access to the build date, as my tundra is sitting at the toyota dealer. Maybe I will go visit it some day, assuming Toyota is going to get off their rear-end and actually fix my tranny.
SOSHeloPilot,
I have been following your posts, and I am waiting on tranny number 2 myself. I have contacted an attorney in LA, and am familiarizing myself with California lemon law. How much are you willing to take? TMCA is not being helpful with me right now, and I have been nothing but nice to them. Please let us know what happens to your tranny #2.
bigdave,
Now ... I am not 100% sure that the 2nd tranny is going out ... could be a computer or other problem ??? It is just driving weird. I want to be very careful ... I am sure that many dealers, regional distrs and TMCA all peek at this forum. so, you must back up what you say.
If I have to get a lawyer .. I would use Jimmy Butler in Columbus, GA.
ALL the car companys know him VERY well ... google him.
But ... I am not looking for a legal/lawyer solution at this point ... I love my truck and want to d*mn thing to run correctly.
I am going to continue to drive it ... per my Toyota dealer ... and just see what happens.
bigdave .. PM me ... I am not a BSer, if you want to talk on the phone .. I will be more than glad to try to help you ... I know this business very, very well.
SOS
PS .. On my way to dealer now to pickup bedliner & bed extender ... will finish this post & answers later (wife is yelling to get out the door .. lol .. ..)
SOSHeloPilot,
I never thought you were a BSer. I just want to see how this second tranny progresses. I will be talking to TMCA again today. I will keep you posted also.
Any body know what is failling in these 6 speed trannies? Mines been at dealership for just over a week was suposed to get it yesterday but service VP called and some how they broke a bracket on tranny so have to get another one, could not tell me what actually is going bad!!!!. All you that are enjoying your Tundras do so for me also.
Hello SOS,
Please send me a private email with the name of the dealership where your trannys are being replaced at 500 and now 900 miles. thanks,
Sorry ... lost this thread and just found it again.
geneowens .... no need to PM dealer .. Atlanta Toyota replaced the transmission at about 500 miles and have issues with 2nd transmission and/or computer at 900+ miles. No 2nd transmission was replaced.
Atlanta Toyota has been super so far ... it is TMCA that I will set my sites on if I continue to have issues.
I talked to Atlanta Toyota and will drive it and see what happens. As strange as this sounds ... I still love this truck ... I just want to get it right.

PS ... I am sure that ALL the Toyota mgmt levels have seen this web site.

alphajoe,
Sorry for the late response ... I lose the threads on here all the time ..
(1) I always watch the tack and ratio it against speedo. ..... The RPMs were up .. that's one way I knew I was not in 6th.
(2) Yes, but my problem is somewhat different.
When transmission is cold ... going down hill, on slight grade ... 20 seconds from house ... then while making a right-hand 90 degree very slow turn ... transmission trys to shift from 3rd or 2nd ... to 1st and ... "WHIRLS" (slips) ... a bit before engaging. This happens 99% of the time at that one place ONLY when the transmission is cold. It will be almost impossible to duplicate this for the dealer.
I might set up a camera if I can and do a video and put it on ... "You-Tube". ... lol ...
The "transmission slowing (downshifting on a hill) when you touch the brake" ... is normal and part of the AI (Artifical Intelligence). Dealer and several on here have said same thing. It actually acts like a "transmission/brake retarder" on a big rig diesel.
Oh ... my .. "clunk" .. is very mild .. lol ...
SOS
PS ... I still like this truck ... just want it to run correctly ...
I have an 07 Crewmax with the 5.7 l and 6 speed transmission. It now has 5500 miles on it. I don't tow anything at all and just got back from taking the family up to Philly, PA. It rode wonderful and I hope these transmission issues affect only a slight few. I'll really pay more attenion to it after reading this tread. Mine is a 2 WD so hopefully it's mainly a 4 WD problem.

It would be nice if Toyota gave their dealers better communication. I still haven't heard why my tranny failed. I still don't have a new tranny either. The dealer still hasn't offered a loaner truck. I am still in a rental Taurus which is killing my back. God is punishing me for something I must have done in high school. I am beyond frustrated.
I dont get all you guys out there. All you do is sh*t all over domestic trucks and how they are crap, and look at all you people in this discussion on your second tranmissions that are still acting up. Im sure it has a lot to do with being a whole new design but come on. I havent heard of problems like this even with Dodge trucks which are know to have crap trannys.
Also has everyone here heard about all the new Tundras with blown camshafts, meaning that the truck need a new engine?
So lets get this straight the new tundras are blowing trannys and engines left & right but everyone still thinks theyre the greatest in reliability. And why isnt this stuff on the news, if it was a domestic company it would be plastered everywhere. This has never happened with a domestic company. whats with thta?
All you guys out there that wanted that tundra for a daily driver, wait a year until GM starts putting 6spd in the 1/2 tons or just buy a gmc denali with 403hp/417tq and a 6spd for the same price. All with 5yr/100,000mi warrenty.
Thanks for the information. I never thought to look for the place of build or build date, but now I am curious. Is there a specific plant that is building trucks with this problem? I need to get some more items out of my truck tomorrow, so I will check the sticker in the door frame for this information. Is the lemon law really in effect if they have it more than 30 days. By the way, it does suck not having my truck. I am really pissed at toyota right now, especially because they stuck me in a crappy rental Ford, and didn't offer a toyota loaner.
At most message boards, the MODS would have already banned guys like this. Everything he says is BS, and you guys are eating it up.
Toyota dealers don't give you Fords to drive while your Toyota is being fixed.

grassy13,
Whoa, just because I am posting about my tranny going out, doesn't make me a domestic basher. I have read the posts you are referring to, but don't make uneducated statements like "all you guys out there". I have always liked domestics and some foreign makes. The new Tundra was a great truck until it dumped on me. I have had a Ford dump on me too. Get your facts straight.
