Bigdave:
I understand early Tundra's transmission failures were DTA supplier quality issue and has since been corrected. Bummer that it happened and your truck is down. The "nap" should make it stronger.

well it probably looks like ive looked at that one before heh... best of luck to you... maybe I will organize some type of Tundra meet for the LA Cty and Ventura County people one of these days
I would like to know where you got this information also, cause everytime I ask TMCA, they skirt the question. The dealer that sold me the truck said "Toyota told him my Tundra was the 7th tranny in June to go out". Did he mean in the USA, at his dealer? I am not trying to talk people out of the 5.7, but people should read posts like mine and weigh their options. Trust me, I miss my truck, but I should have listened to my friends if I could do it over again and not buy a "first year vehicle". To all of you other skeptics about people posting problems with their Tundras, be glad your tundra is still running and be glad there's people like me giving you free information on how the new Tundra is holding up.
Man, you are becoming chicken little on this forum. Even if your story is true, I ,for one, am tired of your negative posts. The sky is not falling. Some have called you a troll and that may be true. Otherwise, you like to whine a lot. Either way, it is old and tiresome.

Good grief! Some of you guys here seem to have a problem dealing with reality. If I were you I would want to know everything that is going on w/ BigDave and his truck. If you choose not to believe him or are tired of his reality, then don't open the freakin thread. Simple enough.
I wish there was a way to document and authenticate all the claims being made about Tundra issues. I'm not disputing that some haven't had any issues, but I strongly suspect that there may be others just stirring the pot here. One online article made a comment something like, "Tundra hate is alive an well on the internet", and there have been alot of negative or polarizing comments, for what many like myself have found to be, just a damn nice truck. I go on snowmobile and motorcycle forums too, and theres a reason mfgs have to keep forums like this and others at arms length. They know first hand how many problems there are by what the dealers are reporting. Whether it jives with what the internet is saying, we can only guess. None of us have a clue what the real % of failures vs trucks sold are, or whether they fall under normal rates for any other vehicle. Right now, the Tundra has a huge bulls eye on its hood, all the buy American crowd loves to dog it, right or wrong. I'm guessing that there aren't nearly as many transmission issues as this thread might lead some to believe.
Yeah not to screw myself over but I was online with another board with stereo equipment years back and after getting a set of subs I started hearing the failure rates and was freaking out. Everyone began slamming the company. The subs did have a 3 year warranty but people said the company was making excuses for not doing the repairs saying it was the users fault. Anyway I put the speakers in the proper sized box powered them at their rms rating and played them loud never having a problem up until the day I sold them (which made them around 4 years old).
Not saying these aren't legit claims on this thread just saying that sometimes you can get the wrong picture.
Also those with tranny issues did you manually shift the vehicle during the first 1,000 miles or did you keep it in auto shift mode?
I kept mine in auto, except when I towed. Hey Bugbutter, my posts aren't negative, they are reality. This site is about reality and ownership experience. The only negative post was regarding the Ford Taurus rental I have been put in by Toyota. I would have preferred a toyota loaner, but no luck. I mean no ill will, and I really hope your truck holds up forever. But keep your garbage accusations off this site.
I can understand why some people would be skeptical of somebody else's radical claims, but honestly, after reading all the posts in this thread, I gotta think that BigDave does have a legitimate claim... though I'm not sure that it is actually the transmission that is failing or something that is controlling the logic of how it operates. Typically a transmission is dealing with a lot of physical stress and a "failed" transmission is usually due to a breakdown due to excessive weight/stress/heat; in other words, it is a "mechanical" failure. What I'm gleaning from the way people describe their trans problems are that there is something else going on that is calling the transmission to fail. So far, unless I'm mistaken, not a single transmission has failed due to a) hot/cold temp days or operation (i.e. outside temp), b) driving with a big payload, or c) driving while towing a heavy trailer.
In the interest of doing some of our own investigation into this matter, why don't we have those that actually have transmission failures post the circumstances so we can see if there is some kind of pattern that we notice. Here are some parameters that would be good to answer:
a) build date of truck
b) mileage of truck at transmission failure(s)
c) weather condition at transmission failure(s) (i.e. temp., humidity level, elevation level)
d) SR5 or Limited
e) 4x4 or 4x2
f) was truck in 2wd mode, 4wd high, or 4wd low (for 4x4s) when failure occurred
g) were noises apparent from the beginning or just shortly before failure occurred
h) speed of truck when failure occurred
i) place that truck was bought from (just list the state)
j) regular cab, double cab, or crew max
k) traction control setting (on/off/some other mode in between)
l) steering column or console mounted shifter
m) pulling a load or having some kind of weight in the back
People can add to this list as needed, but it would be helpful for those that have experienced a trans failure to list this info so that we can see if a pattern exists at all...
5.7, 4X4 DC, 4700 Miles on ODO, daily driver in California (Average temps 75F), towed my 8000 lb trailer 3 times in the last 4 months (Well under tow limit), I don't lead foot except for freeway onramps, use tow/haul mode when towing (Also tow in 5th, as 6th gear won't keep up enough RPM's to keep my trailer going). Nothing else stands out. My tranny went out while I was leaving work one day, under no hard acceleration??
Just as a thought, I really hope my tranny was a Friday night special at the transmission plant. Nobody should have to go through what Toyota has done to me. I might not be so angry if Toyota stepped up to the plate and gave me a loaner truck, told me they were really sorry for the inconvenience, and got the new tranny fast. But here I am, still no tranny, not ONE phone call from my dealer since it happened. ONly TMCA has spoke with me, and thats because I sent them an angry email. Now, they are looking at taking my truck back through arbitration or the lemon-law, whichever one comes first. I am not messing around any more. I need my truck. If I needed a Taurus, I would have bought one.
I got called by Toyota today, my second tranny is in, they said I could probably pick up my truck tomorrow?? Still no answers why it failed. I will keep you posted on how the new one is running, assuming I really do get it back tomorrow. PS, don't read or follow this thread if you think I am some sort of troll. If you do believe in trolls, it's safe to say you are most likely schitzophrenic and belong on medication. My guess is, you are in your house right now, with all the shades pulled down, no lights on, and wondering if that really is an ice cream truck parked across your street with the tinted windows and radar dish on the roof. To all others, thank you for all the kind words and your support.
