Yes if you can get a 65mm only, then you'll be fine. I can't edit my original post to reflect that, though. Time has expired for me to do that.

Anyone else run into issues with their oil filter flute slipping? I have a metal one. I'm going to see what the dealership has. I bought a 65mm.

The dealership didn't sell any special tool. They said try napa. I bought another one at Napa and it slipped as well. I finally grabbed a 1/2" torque wrench drive for leverage (It was the only handled ratchet that I had). THis helped a lot but it still wasn't easy. I had to push hard up against the oil flute wrench with my left hand and pull on the torque wrench with my right hand.

Getting skid plate back on
My skid plate actually went on pretty easy. I rested it on a padded creeper. I put two bolts in the front (just slightly threaded in ) then move to the back and this enabled me to see in between the plate and the mounting holes so that I could more easily line things up.

One last question. I found a metal washer in my oil filter kit box. Does anyone know what this is for? It is to replace whatever washer is on the oil drain plug? Or maybe it was just in the box by mistake? The instructions on the box didn't address what this washer was for. They only spoke of the rubber washers.

Mine slips too. I use a shop rag and place it between the filter housing and the flute. Off the subject i put a little notch in one of the tabs on the outside of the housing cap that the little metal prong touches. when i put it back on i just tighten it so that it ends up in the exact same position. Let me know some input if anyone thinks that is a good idea.

I just completed this, and what a pain. I got a 65mm metal flute wrench and it just slipped couldn't keep it on no matter how much force I applied and it was too late to get a smaller one. I measured the end cap and its 63mm, am I odd man out here with a smaller end cap then everyone else or what?

I ended up getting it off with large channel locks, that was a tight fit, it seems like everything is designed to perfectly get in the way of that.

I don't know why you guys are beating yourselves up over the proper filter wrench to use.

GET A KD-TOOLS 3253

It grabs tight and does not slip.

I purchased the KD 3253 at ToolSource.com.
Its on the way.
The Penzoil 65/67 cap wrench slipped when I did oil change #1.
So I bought this one for oil change #2.

I bought a 2 1/2" (65mm) filter wrench from autozone and it kept slipping so I had to use an adj. filter wrench and that was a major pain. It was all I could do to get that part loosened. I think next time I'll buy the KD wrench, the cheap china wrench isn't doing the job. Whoever is tightening that at the factory needs to use a torque wrench. I'm not sure how much 25 nm is but what I removed was at least 150 ft. lbs. John

Just finish my first oil change and found out the cheap 65mm oil filter wrence could do the job as previous threads said.

I spent almost one hours to shop around local retail store and finally get a Craftsman univeral oil filter wrench 28 20519 to get the filter cap down. This universal wrench works. But it is really hard to get it off with this tool. After I unscrew about 1/2 turn, it is still very hard to turn by hand.

I just placed an order for KD 3253 wrench from amazon.com and hopefully it will be an easier job next time.

Thank everone who provide those valuable information.

Same experience here with the filter housing needing incredible amounts of torque to remove. Some one else posted that they lubed the oring which made removal easier. Perhaps Toyota should prelube this oring or recomend the proper lube to use.

Wow what a pain as compared to a typical oil change on anything else! They sure don't want the everyday Joe doing this themselves do they? Any idea what Toyota charges for an oil change on this beast?

From postings on TS it looks like dealer oil change prices can vary from 20 to 100 dollars. One caution though, dealerships often like to slip 5w30 in the truck and play stupid when told it takes 0w20 or 5w20. I found the DIY oil change to be ok except for the torque required to remove the housing. If I had a better wrench I'm sure my oil change would have taken half the amount of time.
