I didn't like the plastic 65/67 mm combination filter wrenches that are relatively easy to find. I found a metal 65 MM wrench at my local NAPA store. It is made by KD tools and is part # KDS3253. I like the single size wrench much better. Hope this helps someone out there.
I too use this filter wrench..The KD too works much better than the plastic.
I did the oil change for the first time in the truck this afternoon. Thanks for the DIY as I knew exactly what I was getting into (dealer changed last time for free).
My only problem is the oil filter drain bolt would not come out. I went to loosen it and the entire filter cap came off instead.....so oil went everywhere, but good thing I had a big oil pan to catch the oil.
Anyone else have this problem?
If the proper torque is used when installing the cap and plug this wil;l not happen..You say the dealer did the last oil change? Dealer shoul use torque specs instead of old hand feel method..There's a reason why the torque specs are given..Another reason I do my own oil changes.
Kudos to Tundra Solutions and all the members involved. I did my first oil change @ 3K and honestly it was a breeze due to this site. Thank you.
Some things to note on the first oil change on my truck which was built in San Antonio, TX. The drain plug has a gasket (felt/paper) on it be careful or you will need a new one. The first oil change, the used oil seems very sticky unique I guess it is the break in oil. The use of the 4.00 Wal Mart Oil filter wrench, modified with a hack saw worked like a charm fit tight no slippage at all. Note that the oil filter o-rings where all coated with silicone grease. The steel skid plate definitely PITA you might need to buy some more of the plastic nut that goes in the skid plate mine broke. Thanks again TS and members....
It starting to get dark; still had plenty of light, but it was getting kind of dim under the truck. I tried to drain the oil filter housing, but couldn't get it to snap in. When I pulled the plug out, it had the O-ring stuck to it. No big deal.
I finish and put the housing back on, but the replacement O-ring that goes in the bottom of the housing doesn't want to go in. I keep thinking to myself "I know the old O-ring is out (it was stuck to the plastic drain plug), so there should be groove for the O-ring to fit into. There wasn't. I finally just toqued the plug cover down to 10 ft-lb and called it a day.
Today at work, it hit me. The O-ring stuck to the drain plug was left over from the LAST oil change, and I never removed the old O-ring. This is the one I'm talking about, BTW:
When I got home tonight, I had some oil leaking from the skid plate, and sure enough - the old O-ring was still in there, with the new one all squished and torn.
Greetings. I am a newbie.
The plastic drain thing that comes with new filter would not fit despite hard pushing. I just removed the filter housing and drained the oil.
Definitely the nastiest oil change I've done. Lots of mass despite all the planning. With out the member's assistance, I would have made a lot more mass!!
Just put in reverse camera today. Very useful tool but definitely not ergonomic as the screen seem to face more towards the passenger and not towards me. They could put a swivel for easier viewing.
Did my first oil change today, what a mess ! I found I didn't have a skid plate, (maybe because of my suspension lift ?) so everything was open and plenty of clearance. I tried to be smooth and capture the flow of oil from the drain plug through a funnel and hose... well the oil came out so fast(even with the fill cap on intentionally to try to slow it) it exceeded the flow rate for the funnel and I had oil everywhere. It didn't get any better from there. I had trouble getting the drain adapter into the filter housing, really had to push hard, a length of hose on it made things easier. Then my auotozone flute wrench broke on the filter housing, this thing was way too tight from the factory. I used a strap wrench to get it off replaced all o rings, wix filter, added mobil 1 and cleaned the driveway, I think the next oil change will be easier since I know better what to expect and I torqued everything.
Doesn't doing your own oil changes void your warranty? I am curous on this.
Just keep a log book of all the maintenance you do including date performed, mileage and specifics about what you did (I use mine to track oil brand, weight, driveshaft greasing, waxing, tires, just about everythign really!). Also save receipts for oil, filters, etc. These 2 things should cover you in the extremely rare instance you would ever need them (i.e.; warranty concerns)
I have no intention of ever working on this truck, so initially I was pleased that Champions of Austin gives free oil changes for life of vehicle purchased there BUT!!!!
first they put in 5-30 despite my repeated requests for 0-20 or 5-20, then when they replaced it with correct oil they improperly installed the filter, hence my Tundra sits in there shop damaged from running low on oil....
...same dealership...left mine with engine cover layed on top of motor (un-connected), positive power cable barely connected (why???), and my Volant CAI unbolted and shifted around (again why???). I will never return there! Such is the the reading of this thread to DImyself!
Good Luck using them!
