TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Good mpg!", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I started off getting 14 from 0-500miles. Went up to about 18 from 1000-5000, and now I am at 15mpg and 6500miles. I drive the same routes everyday, and use the same gas. i dont know why it fluctuates.
Fluctuation probably due to winter/summer gas changeover which usually happens in early spring...

Running the Wheels off my F150 SuperCrew - NewGen Tundra is Next
I just calculated my first tank and it came out to about 18 miles per gallon of about 70%highway 30%street. In all honesty, I don't believe it though, I can't imagine I am getting this good of gas mileage. I was expecting about 16mpg. I'm going to continue monitoring my gas mileage though.
Posted this a while back. The erratic readings was because I was towing a trailer thru the mountains. In the first part of the graph it was thru Colorado, in the last part it was thru Tennessee. The flat part in the middle was in town driving. You can see how low the first 3 or 4 points are, after I got about 1500miles on it, the mileage went up.
Took delivery on 4/30/07

[quote=Thomask9590;723468]18- 20- 15 what! I can barely break 13.2........But I am beating every fricken thing off the line.........Seriously I did try to drive like an old man and I still only get 13.8 in town. I will have to try the traction thing.
BUT WHAT IS THE TRACTION THING.........i can't locate what to do on this thread......please explain ........cause i get about 14 mpg on highway !!!
Ethanol will yield less mpg. Here is how it worked in my chevy flex fuel saburban. Ethanol has a higher octane rating than unleaded. You would think that it would help the power and mpg being higher octane. Wrong, the trucks computer senses higher octane and then retards the timing to compensate. there for loss of power and mpg. This mite just be the reason for some of the Toyota's getting less mpg. I live in Idaho. We do not have Ethanol yet. I burn 85 octane only and get some pretty good mpg.
If memory serves, the higher octane would allow the engine to advance the timing. The problem is that there is less energy in one gal of ethanol than one gal of gas.
I go to LA and the Bay area at least 10 times a year...for the last 7 years...business mostly.
I have YET to figure out why you think you have the worst traffic. Come to Atlanta and you will see what bad traffic really is. I don't care who ranks the traffic in those online surveys. I have driven in all of the above and Atlanta rush hour is the worst PERIOD...no exceptions(although if you beat the rush hour it is probably one of the fastest as well...probably why we do better in the rankings). Atlanta is what it is...the city with the most traffic cutting through the center and around the perimeter...in all of North America.
Find ONE stretch of road in either of those Cali cities where you have 16 lanes of traffic........ONE! And all 16 of them come to a CRAWL about 3:30 every Friday. From my house to my old job in Norcross took an average of 1:45 minutes every day...ONE WAY...and its only a hair over 30 miles away...ALL EXPRESSWAY. Fridays...3 hours...minimum...if there aren't a few wrecks thrown in.
Now...I must confess...I changed jobs mainly because of the horrible commute. I am now 17 miles North of my job and I don't see any traffic since my job is North of Marietta/Atlanta.
I would classify your driving as City driving...since you can't drive at highway speeds.
The classifications are based on the speed you can drive and the amount of starting stopping you do...not the actual road you're on.
Later!
PS...if people are that worried about fuel then why the heck did you buy a 6000lb truck. DUH!!!! Ya' should have bought a Prius.
By the way...it is the most fuel efficient full size gasoline truck in production. GM claims they have better but if you Google the review sites you'll find out the Tundra beats it by a mile or two....and without that silly half on half off crap.
If you want better fuel economy then you could buy a Dodge with a Cummings and the manual tranny. Start off in 2 and shift to 6 when you get rolling. I've heard people getting 25+ with this setup.
Maybe it has gotten worse since you were here! I live 6 miles from work. It takes me 30 minutes to get home! And no I don't exaggerate. I just drove 3 hours on roads headed north with no traffic and few stop signs or stops and I got up to 17.4 mpg. But I think CA gas is part to blame. And no I'm not complaining as much at the truck as I am at flaunting how bad the traffic is in my area. 14 mpg when I'm crawling speed wise on and off the gas. Not bad considering the power. But I am pissed at the stupid additives that CA uses in gasoline. I was towing a jetski and got 17.4. This huge truck out handles my saturn.
I've figured it out with this truck - drive at 70mph or 65 on the highway and you'll get 18+ mpg. But if you drive at higher speeds (even 75), your mileage will suffer.
And for city driving, drive like a grandma and you'll be fine. But it's so hard to do that in this truck because of all the power that it has.
Just over 4800 miles now. Last 220 mile trip, with the cruise set most of the time at 70-72- 20.2 mpg. Mine has definitley improved as the miles rack up.

17.5 - 17.8 mpg at 1600 miles on it. I noticed computer showed better mpg when driving at 6th in sequential mode. Can't explain why.
Absolutely right on the 6th Sequential mode. Only way I drive now.
You ever notice how if your coasting in automatic mode the engines drops into a low gear. It helps for a quick acceleration but it creates drag...which lowers fuel economy.
The Sequential mode and 6th gear doesn't drop down as easily...only if you hit the gas to accelerate or you slow dramatically.
By the way...I was showing off the truck to my sister-in-law...turned off the stability control and traction control...wound the truck out and hit 2nd...CHIRP....and at 60 hit 3rd...CHIRP! These trucks have some pretty mean power and clutches! 3rd gear with an automatic transmission...and stock...SWEET!!!!
Wow! how are you guys getting that kind of milege? I'm averaging 14.7 per gallon after two tanks. Mixed city and freeway. I'm running the 5.7L 4X4 Limited DC. Would love to see better mileage numbers.
