My experience is that on my first tank I got 18.4 mpg , second tank was 17.4 , then 16.9 then 16.5 . after that it was mostly 16'swithan occasional 17 and a couple mid 15's . I kept wondering why the first two tanks were so much better because I was driving pretty much the same route . So a couple of days ago I decided that I'd try premium gas . Driving virtually the same route as before . My mileage jumped from 16.5 to 17.9 , enough of an increase to make the premium slightly more cost effective . Of couse that's a one tank experiment so far , but the change to premium is the only change I made . I definitely did not see more highway miles on the tank of premium . I believe that I read one poster on this forum state that the computer is sophisticated enough to detect the increased octane and advance the timing to take advantage of it . The 5.7 does have a 10/1 compression ratio so it makes sense . So far I'm a believer . Filled up with premium again . As long as it's only 20 cents more I'll continue the experiment .
I just pulled a quick read off my 'puter which sez 16.3 mpg mostly hiway drivin', I too turn off the VSC..but not completely (both, 3 sec hold)
I noticed another post here that best mileage is @ 60 mph..so I set my cruz to that...seems to work !
My 'empty' read was after the mt lite came on and I figger'd 4 gal reserve which @ avg. 16 mpg, gives me 64 XTRA miles prior to total poopout.
I still am having some difficuly, as others are as well, with the gas figures I've been see'n from 5.7 owners....I can 'get' +22 readings off my 'puter...don't mean squat, until you do a EoT reading and calculate long hand for the final figure. I realize the the sixth overdrive gear allows for less fuel consumption but the additional weight, both in vehicle and displacement argues for less mileage....just my 2 cents worth :devil":
I'd like to more about the sequential shift as my 'dealer' has no idea...I have an Acura RSX with sequential shift..but it automatically shifts down to first gear when she stops..ready to take off again...the Tundra is al over the place during shifts but never downshifts back down automatically ????
Anyone have a good explanation ???

I just filled up my second tank. First tank I got 15 this tank 18 mix of city and country driving. Got stuck in several traffic jams where I creeped at 5 miles an hour for 2 hours.
Really happy so far only have 800 miles on so hoping it gets a little better as more break in.
Holy crap! My last tank consisted of highway and traffic driving. In fact one drive consisted of about 1.5 hours of traffic straight. On the way home I calculated my mileage at 19.4 mpg!!! My truck broke 1k miles on this tank. My current tank with about 40 miles in is at 20 mpg!!! It was up to 20.1 but dropped back to 20 when I pulled up in front of my house. The last two tanks I filled at the same station which is in napa area. I think they have special additives or maybe it's because the mileage that is now on the truck? I do find that my mileage drops down when I go over 65 mph with the towing package version; not sure if the sport version does this as well. At 70 mph I still get great mileage just not quite as great. I hope this isn't a fluke. If this truck continues to get these numbers with this much power wow. And if it turns out to be reliable toyota may have a customer for life.
On the trip I passed 3 people like they weren't moving in the standard drive mode. This thing breaks 85 mph from 45~50 mph pretty quick. It was funny how much longer the ford behind me had to wait to pass the same person.
For review I have a:
5.7L 6 speed
double cab
2wd
18's
towing package
Try turning off the traction control and vehicle stability system. You'll need to shift manually but it works great. Press the traction control button and hold it for 3-4 seconds while parked and you'll see 2 lights pop up on the dash rather than 1.
It seems to have added about 3 MPG for me!
The way I drive, I'm keeping the stab. ctrl. on at all times.
O.K. this is going to sound stupid but it is something I just discoverd. First 7,000 on the truck I was seeing in the 17-18+ MPG (this is good I was happy). Next I took a 5,000 mile trip went for Chattanooga to Colorado around and back. Had 2 Kayaks and 3 Mtn. bikes on the top of the truck. The fuel milage went down. This did not suprise me, but when I got back my milage stayed in the 14-15. I was a bit confused by this. Today I realized that I had put more air in the tires. I went from 28 ish to 36-37 psi. Had a load etc so I wanted to make sure I was coverd. Today I went back to 28ish and I am seeing my milage going up. Only put about 50 miles since I droped the pressure but I am quickly watching my average go up . If some one else out there has low milage and is runing 18" wheels I would like to see you try this and see what it does.
Tom
Can someone please explain how this is possible. I'm running 44lbs in my truck. Problem is i'm only getting 14.2.. Mostly city.. I thought that more air in the tires mean better mileage because of less surface area on the road. Please help i can't seem to get my mileage up there!!
Have a 5.7L 4x4 DC, Std Bed. Computer is reading 18.1 after a weekend round trip from DT Denver to Breckenridge (gain from 5000 ft to 9200ft with a trip over an 11000 ft pass). 87 octane, about 250 miles total on the truck so far.
Drove conservatively with flow of traffic in fast lane, but did stab it a couple of times to unleash the beast.
Will calculate mileage manually and repost, but if these are within 1 mpg of actual, I will be very pleased.
Just floor it and forget about it or buy a pink hybrid
Now that's funny!
I am getting about 15-16 mpg overall with 6,000 miles on the beast now. I drive pretty normally with an occasional right foot camshaft test while passing domstic trucks that are in my way. I am getting tha same mileage in my 07 Tundra that I got with my 02 Ranger so I am pretty happy.
