I think the prob with the passenger airbag comes from the computer thinking the seatbelt is always engaged. The day I left the lot with mine I ran both seatbelts behind the seats and buckled them for a quick fix - no playing with the wiring at all. Half the time you start the truck the pass airbag still doesn't work - I can only guess that it assumes since the seatbelt never gets unbuckled there might be a child-seat there?
I, too, gleefully pulled the spring out of BOTH sides before reading the entire thread. I saw the staff admonishment, but thought it got cleared up in the updated OP.
While I can understand that the passenger airbag is linked with the seat belt buckle electronics, I am dismayed that Toyota's nanny-state mentality would go so far as to forcibly disable the airbag after a certain number of engine starts with the seat belt always engaged. Unbelievable to what lengths they will go to "protect us from ourselves".
[ETA] I put the stupid spring back in on the passenger side. The quick-fix with the buckle out of DVD case material didn't work; the plastic was too flimsy. I'll probably hunt for a metal buckle for cheap.
I removed the spring from my passenger and driver side. the driver side went fine as far as I know, and the passenger side the lights never came back up and the airbag light didnt work so i replaced the spring. now the airbag off and on light and pasenger light never work unless there is a passenger! Do any of you know if the lights at least the airbag off light is illuminated all the time?
Finally after almost 2 years I did the spring removal on both sides. The driver's side was easy and no more chiming or even the little person blinking anymore in the instrument cluster. I can only hope by doing this that no one mentioned is that the driver's side airbag in the steering wheel is NOT disabled - NO ONE thought of this did they or is everybody assuming that little spring missing has no effect on the steering wheel airbag working? Now, the passenger side I tried removing the spring and the cop is correct, the passenger side airbag is always off even when someone heavy is sitting on the passenger seat. So, I did what the cop said, but instead of slidding a piece of black electrical tape in the side where the sensor is from what looked like the picture the cop showed us, instead I slid the white clip up all the way (not down like most are doing being gravity to force down the white clip) and when the white clip was up all the way, I put a small piece of black electrical tape around the white clip to hold it up and never slid down. I started truck and sat in passenger seat and now the airbag light comes ON when I sit on the seat and when lifting up off the seat, the airbag OFF light comes on as it should. I just hope it stays that way on the passenger side with the black tape staying in place or I will have to put the passenger spring back in to be safe - wife was pissed when I did this removal of spring - oh well. Now, this all could have been resolved if the dealer should at no cost disable like the owner's manual says can be done which is ONLY to disable the chime ONLY on the passenger side. The manual does not state anything about the driver's chime being able to disable, but I bet it can be done, but dealers are not willing to do it - idiots. I'll take my chances for now and keep watching the passenger side ON/OFF button when the misses sits on the passenger seat so it works properly.
I hope you guys keep in mind that when the airbags do go off and you're not wearing a seatbelt, your faces will potentially get ripped from your heads if your neck doesn't get broken first - the airbag is a "supplemental restraint system" in addition to the seatbelt IOW the seatbelt works together with the airbags and does most of the restraining in a crash. It also keeps you seated in place in order for you to keep better control of the vehicle. So in essence you could say that your potentially risking other people's lives if you lose control over your vehicle when you're not wearing a seatbelt during a crash.
I can totally understand trying to eliminate the annoying beeping sound (i.e. if you're driving down the driveway a few feet after getting your mail ), but to go through such great lengths to permanently disable a key lifesaving safety feature that may very possibly one day enable you to see your children grow up really amazes me. Seatbelts and airbags have come a long way these days and the small inconvenience or discomfort they may cause while wearing them is not even worth risking the vehicle occupants' lives over. I can surely vouch for the fact if people could see what happens to an unrestrained human body in a truck during a crash at even lower speeds, you guys would think twice about messing with and permanently disabling the very sophisticated and advanced restraint setup in your trucks. The fact that it's actually "smart" enough to detect the belts being constantly buckled after a few key cycles is pretty amazing. From what I understand, you can get the seatbelt chime disabled via ECM reprogramming by a Toyota tech, but to be annoyed by the little blinking light on the dash and to go through such great lengths modifying the seatbelt setup is rather unreasonable IMHO. I wouldn't want to be the poor sucker that purchases the truck from someone who tampered with the seatbelt setup getting into a crash and having the restraint system not fully do it's job. Sure, it's your right to modify your vehicle the way you want to, but keep in mind you're potentially harming other people in doing so if the circumstances are just so.
I know it can be a very sensitive subject when people are given the impression they are needing to be protected from themselves, but I think some of the ideas in this thread are going a bit too far.

I just did it today and with the engine running, the passenger airbag and airbag off light was ON when I lifted up off the seat to see if the light would switch from ON to OFF. Then, I sat back down on the passenger side and the airbag and airbag ON light came back on. So, I think you have a problem if the OFF light is NOT on after you put the spring back in while the engine is running. I'm no expert, but I would try it again and if still no OFF light while no one in passenger seat, then I would make sure the spring is still in the buckle and try sliding the buckle in again. I remember someone saying you have to be very careful re-installing the buckle and making sure it clips into place. Try it 2-3 times with the spring back in and hopefully you get the 'off' light to come on while no one in the passenger seat and if someone is in the passenger seat, the airbag ON light comes on. I will be trying this passenger seat a few more times in the next few days to make sure it is working properly with off and on light coming on as it should. I was very reluctant to mess with the passenger side, but I figured the driver's side worked fine, but the passenger side did not until I taped the white passenger part all the way up to make the off and on light work properly without the spring in. If I had to do it all again, I would not have messed with the passenger seat buckle since whomever rides on that passenger side always wears a seat belt anyways and only unbuckles while truck is running to get out and go inside the house while I keep it running to park the beast in the tight fitting garage space. It all could be solved if my dealer would just disable the passenger side chiming noise which is in the owner's manual and it should be a convenience item that all dealers should do if the customer requests it. I had the dealer when bought new disable the auto locking doors to NEVER lock in gear because I hate that - I do not live in a high crime area and do NOT want my doors to lock ever. If dealer can do this, then they should easily just disable the passenger chime, but I can see them not doing the driver's side since someone has to drive the vehicle, but no one has had a problem with the driver's spring removed, just issues with the passenger side airbag on and off button. Good luck!
I would like to inform you that we at TundraSolutions DO NOT recommend anyone to disable any safety device in their Tundra or any on-road vehicle. This thread is very long and has some great information within it, yet it has become very confusing and cumbersome. On behalf of TundraSolutions, we encourage anyone that is going to attempt this mod to know the risks before taking the plunge.
This thread is closed for future discussion. If you have performed the mod and would like to ask what to do next or how to reverse what you've done, please create a new thread pertaining to that topic.
