I know my question MAY seem like a flame, but it is NOT intended as such...
I've heard that our vehicles have "blackboxes" now and tracks information about speed, brake on/off etc. Does doing this mod make the blackbox think the seatbelts are not fastened? Does the dash light flash even if you're buckled up? (I'm assuming not)
Maybe I don't quite understand how this mod works exactly.
No, it's an honest question.
The light doesn't flash ever.
As Mainliner explained in his thread, gravity now holds down the clip instead of the buckle pushing it down.
So, the vehicle is made to 'think' both seatbelts are always buckled. Therefore, no need for the light or buzzer.
Personally, as far as blackboxes or accidents go, I don't concern myself with worrying about questions in case of an accident. If ,God forbid, I was in an accident, I would have the seatbelt marks to prove so that would override any question about modified seatbelt sensors, etc.
Since function of the safety harness is not altered, I see no reason for harrassment. I'm a big boy and I don't need the reminder. Seatbelts have been the law since I've driven.
A seatbelt saved my life and i have the scar to prove it. That being typed.....Why would anyone need a buzzer / beeper to tell them to put one on? Darwin theory sounds pretty good in this case. Down with the chime! Up with the smart folks.
I here you on that one. I have the scars to prove I wasnt wearing a seatbelt. but the seat belt was broken and there was a manufactures recall on it but I never recieved one. needless to say I sued and got a little money but they said it was both parties faults because I should not of been driving with a broken seatbelt, which I shouldnt of but I couldnt just not go to work. I think they should have the buzzer on the back seats for things like childeren when they unbuckle because you cant always watch whats going on back there. but in the front seat there should be no buzzer it's obvious if someone is wearing one or not.

I just did this...very nice! BUT, I now have the "passenger airbag off" light constantly illuminated (seat buckled, unbuckled, in gear, not in gear). Anyone seeing this?
No blinking light for the seat belt and no chimes...

I once saw the same thing happen when I attempted to stop the passenger light from blinking as well. It doesn't work the same way as the driver side. I think it has something to do with the weight sensor.

Shoot... I love the no chime but the airbag light being on bothers me (and especially my wife) a little more. I think I'll put the spring back in unless someone has any other ideas.
Great info though - I wonder why others don't see the light... Bucket seats vs. bench maybe?

okay, last post and I'll let this die. I'm an ***... When all else fails read the manual and learn how the DC and CM airbag systems work. They work on weight and sense a "small" object like a child and automatically turns on the "airbag off" light. When a large object, like my mother-in-law is sensed it turns on the "airbag on" light. I took the spring out and tested the system while my 3 year old was in the seat.
Sorry for the false alarm... Your help was appreciated. I took the spring back out and all is good!!!

Just wanted to say thanks for the great howto. I stumbled upon this site looking for a solution to the same problem on my 06 RAV4. Just wanted to post and confirm that the seatbelts in the 06+ RAV4 are identical to those referenced in this howto and the same procedure works great.
I used a small pair of needlenose pliers to remove the spring which kept it from boinging to some unknown place inside the car.
Thanks again! It's a shame that we live in such a nanny-state that Toyota has chosen to remove the choice for such things from their customers. I've sent a message to Toyota via their website feedback form letting them know how I feel (I don't mind the feature, just let the customer decide if they want it disabled!), and would encourage any others performing this modification to do the same. If enough people speak up maybe future models won't require a screwdriver and pliers to disable a "feature" that should be user-selectable in the first place.
I about lost my mind one day and I did the above described deal in the parking lot of my sons football practise in about 3 minutes, cant be happier. That chiming crap was driving me batty! I left the pass one in cuz my boy rides with me a lot and I like the reminder for him to put his on, but I am one of those dont like being told to do something type of people and the that chiming was reminding me of a nagging wife I never had! <grin>
You know the dang thing wouldn't be so bad if it didn't chime forever. Geez, I get 5 slow dings, then 50 fast ones. (yes I counted them) It is wayyyy annoying. If it were less chimes, we wouldn't be looking for ways to cut it out and subsequently defeating the purpose.
